Chapped lips
My lips become very dry and white after a while, especially at the corners, to the point that it hurts to open my mouth.
However, it eventually gets better on its own (I don't apply any medication).
Is this normal? How should I manage it? My mom suggests applying Vaseline; is that appropriate?

Dr. Li Yufen reply Dermatology
Chapped lips may require attention to whether you are consuming irritating foods, using lipsticks or lip balms that may cause allergic reactions, or if there is a dietary imbalance leading to vitamin deficiencies.
Additionally, consider if you are spending time in air-conditioned or excessively dry environments.
It is recommended to regularly apply petroleum jelly and to apply a thick layer on chapped lips before bedtime.
Thank you!

Dry, cracked lips are a common issue that many people experience, and they can be caused by a variety of factors. Understanding the underlying causes and exploring effective treatments can help alleviate this discomfort.
Causes of Dry, Cracked Lips
1. Environmental Factors: Changes in weather, particularly cold, dry air, can lead to moisture loss in the lips. Wind exposure can also exacerbate this condition.
2. Dehydration: Insufficient water intake can lead to dehydration, which often manifests as dry skin and lips.
3. Dietary Deficiencies: Lack of essential vitamins and minerals, particularly B vitamins, vitamin E, and zinc, can contribute to lip dryness.
4. Lip Licking: While it may seem instinctive to lick dry lips, saliva evaporates quickly and can leave lips even drier than before.
5. Allergic Reactions: Certain ingredients in lip products, cosmetics, or even toothpaste can cause allergic reactions, leading to dryness and irritation.
6. Medical Conditions: Conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, or cheilitis (inflammation of the lips) can also cause persistent dryness and cracking.
Solutions for Dry, Cracked Lips
1. Hydration: Ensure you are drinking enough water throughout the day. Staying hydrated is crucial for maintaining skin moisture, including the lips.
2. Moisturizing: Applying a good lip balm is essential. Products containing ingredients like beeswax, shea butter, or lanolin can provide a protective barrier and help retain moisture. Vaseline (petroleum jelly) is also a great option as it seals in moisture effectively.
3. Avoid Irritants: If you suspect that certain products are causing your lip issues, try to eliminate them from your routine. This includes flavored lip balms or those with strong fragrances.
4. Humidifier: Using a humidifier in your home, especially during the winter months, can help maintain moisture in the air and prevent your lips from drying out.
5. Gentle Exfoliation: Occasionally, you can gently exfoliate your lips to remove dead skin cells. This can be done using a soft toothbrush or a homemade sugar scrub. However, be cautious not to over-exfoliate, as this can lead to further irritation.
6. Dietary Adjustments: Ensure your diet is rich in vitamins and minerals. Foods high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as fish, nuts, and seeds, can also help improve skin health.
7. Consult a Healthcare Professional: If your symptoms persist despite trying these remedies, it may be wise to consult a dermatologist or healthcare provider. They can assess for underlying conditions and may prescribe medicated ointments if necessary.
Is It Normal for Lips to Heal on Their Own?
It is not uncommon for lips to go through cycles of dryness and healing. The skin on the lips is thinner and more delicate than the skin on the rest of the body, which makes it more susceptible to environmental changes. If your lips occasionally become dry and then return to normal without treatment, it may simply be a reaction to temporary conditions. However, if the dryness is recurrent and painful, it is advisable to take preventive measures and consider a more consistent moisturizing routine.
Conclusion
In summary, dry, cracked lips can be a nuisance, but with proper care and attention to hydration and environmental factors, they can often be managed effectively. Using products like Vaseline is indeed suitable for protecting and moisturizing your lips. If you find that your condition does not improve or worsens, seeking professional advice is always a good step to ensure there are no underlying health issues.
