Concerns About Stopping Birth Control: Acne and Menstrual Cycle Questions - Obstetrics and Gynecology

I have a question I would like to ask the doctor?

Hello doctor, my menstrual cycle has been irregular for a long time.
Since I started taking Dailian in September to regulate my cycle, my periods have been normal.
However, since I started taking the medication, I've developed a lot of acne on my back and neck, which I didn't have before.
I would like to ask if it would be harmful for me to stop the medication on my own? If I stop the medication now, what are the chances that my period will come on its own next month? Thank you, doctor.

TINA, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/01/10

Dr. Lü Lizheng reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

The acne breakout may not necessarily be caused by the use of the medication Dailian for menstrual regulation, and stopping the medication on your own may not lead to improvement in the acne.
It is not necessary to discontinue the medication.
It is recommended to ensure adequate sleep, reduce the intake of greasy foods, engage in moderate exercise, and maintain facial cleanliness.
If necessary, seek assistance from a dermatologist.
If you stop the medication on your own, your menstrual cycle may become unstable for a short period, and it will take some time to readjust.
Sincerely, Dr.

When considering stopping birth control, particularly hormonal contraceptives like Dailian, it’s essential to understand the potential effects on your menstrual cycle and skin health. Birth control pills are often prescribed to regulate menstrual cycles and manage acne, but they can also lead to side effects such as acne flare-ups when discontinued.

Firstly, it’s important to note that hormonal birth control works by regulating hormones in your body, which can help stabilize your menstrual cycle and reduce acne. If you have been taking Dailian since September and have experienced a normalization of your cycle, stopping the medication may lead to a return to your previous irregular cycle. This is because your body may take some time to readjust to its natural hormonal fluctuations after discontinuing the pill.

Regarding your concerns about acne, it’s common for individuals to experience an increase in acne when they stop taking hormonal contraceptives. This is due to the sudden change in hormone levels, particularly if your body was previously reliant on the hormones provided by the pill to manage oil production in the skin. If you have noticed an increase in acne since starting the pill, it’s possible that stopping it could lead to a resurgence of acne, especially if your skin was prone to breakouts before starting the medication.

If you are considering stopping Dailian, it’s advisable to consult with your healthcare provider first. They can provide personalized advice based on your medical history and current health status. They may suggest a gradual approach to discontinuing the medication or recommend alternative treatments for acne if that is a concern.

As for the likelihood of your menstrual cycle returning to normal after stopping the pill, it varies from person to person. Some individuals may experience a return to regular cycles within a few months, while others may take longer. Factors such as age, overall health, and the underlying cause of your previous irregular cycles can all influence this.

In summary, stopping birth control can have various effects on your menstrual cycle and skin health. While you may experience a return to your natural cycle, there is also a risk of increased acne. It’s crucial to discuss your concerns with a healthcare professional who can guide you through the process and help you manage any potential side effects. They may also suggest alternative treatments for acne if necessary, ensuring you have a comprehensive plan moving forward.
