Post-Varicocele Surgery: Swelling and Discomfort - Urology

Share to:

Hello, doctor. After varicocele surgery, the testicle appears slightly red and enlarged. Is this normal?

I have seen your previous response regarding postoperative testicular redness and swelling being normal.
I would like to ask how many days it typically takes for the redness and swelling to subside (without pain)? Because just looking down makes me uncomfortable, and I don't dare to touch it.
Additionally, could you please clarify where the high ligation is performed? Will I be able to feel it when I touch my testicles? If I masturbate two days later, will it worsen the hematoma? I'm also curious, since it was under local anesthesia (traditional surgery), what was happening when I felt a strong pulling sensation during the procedure (it made me clench my fists)? Even though there was just a thin curtain separating us, I absolutely did not dare to look, and I still want to seek clarification from you, doctor.

Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology

A-Gan: Hello, after surgery, it is common for the testicles to be red and swollen, which generally takes about one month to resolve.
Ice packs can be used to alleviate the swelling.
The high ligation is performed at a very high position, approximately 2 centimeters below the navel, and is no longer within the scrotum.
This may lead to hematoma due to the pulling of blood vessels and nerves during the surgical process.
If you have any further questions, feel free to ask, and we can discuss and research together.
Please note that online responses should only be used as a reference; it is essential to seek medical attention at a healthcare facility if necessary.

After varicocele surgery, it is common to experience some swelling and discomfort in the scrotal area. This is a normal part of the healing process, and the duration of swelling can vary from person to person. Typically, you can expect the swelling to gradually decrease over a period of several days to a couple of weeks. However, if the swelling persists beyond this timeframe or is accompanied by severe pain, it is essential to consult your physician to rule out any complications such as hematoma or infection.

Regarding the discomfort you feel when looking down, this is not unusual. Post-operative sensitivity in the area can lead to discomfort, and it is advisable to avoid any unnecessary pressure or manipulation of the area until you have fully healed. As for the high ligation (high tie) procedure, it involves tying off the affected veins higher up in the scrotum, typically above the level of the testicles. You should not be able to feel the ligation site when palpating the testicles, as it is performed above the scrotal sac.

Concerning your question about masturbation two days post-surgery, it is generally recommended to avoid any sexual activity, including masturbation, for at least one to two weeks after the procedure. Engaging in such activities too soon can increase the risk of complications, including bleeding or hematoma formation, as the area is still healing. It is best to follow your surgeon's specific post-operative instructions regarding resuming sexual activity.

During the surgery, if you felt a strong pulling sensation, it is likely due to the surgical manipulation of the veins and surrounding tissues. Even under local anesthesia, you may still experience sensations of pressure or pulling, as local anesthesia numbs pain but does not eliminate all sensations. This is a common experience during many surgical procedures, and the surgical team is trained to manage these sensations while ensuring your comfort.

In summary, while some swelling and discomfort are expected after varicocele surgery, it is crucial to monitor your symptoms and communicate with your healthcare provider if you have any concerns. Adhering to post-operative care instructions, including avoiding sexual activity for a recommended period, will help facilitate a smoother recovery. If you have any further questions or experience unusual symptoms, do not hesitate to reach out to your surgeon for guidance.
