Questions after the healing of glans skin lesions?

Hello Dr.
Hsu, since I asked about the glans injury on May 5th, it has been over a week and it has healed.
However, the area where the skin has healed appears to be a different color, a dark red, is this normal due to the new skin? Also, can I use petroleum jelly for maintenance on the glans with phimosis? Thank you for taking the time to answer.

w, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/05/18

Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology

W: Hello, the newly grown epidermis takes about six months to become similar to the surrounding skin.
However, for deeper wounds (such as those from a circumcision), the healed area may still appear different from the surrounding epidermis.
You can use petroleum jelly for care.
If there are any unclear points, feel free to ask again, and we can discuss and research further.

When it comes to healing and caring for the glans after an injury, it’s important to understand the healing process and what is considered normal. After an injury to the glans, such as a cut or abrasion, the body goes through several stages of healing, which can take time and may present with various changes in color and texture.

1. Healing Process: The initial phase of healing involves inflammation, where the area may appear red and swollen. This is a normal response as the body sends blood and nutrients to the injured site to promote healing. As healing progresses, the color may change, often becoming darker or more red as new tissue forms. This darker color can be attributed to the presence of new blood vessels and the formation of granulation tissue, which is a sign that the area is healing. Over time, this color should gradually lighten as the tissue matures and the skin returns to its normal appearance.

2. Color Changes: The dark red color you are observing is likely due to the formation of new, delicate tissue. It is common for newly healed skin to have a different color compared to the surrounding skin. This is especially true for areas that have been injured, as the new skin may take some time to fully integrate with the surrounding tissue. If the area is not showing signs of infection (such as increased redness, swelling, warmth, or discharge), it is generally a positive sign that healing is occurring.

3. Moisture and Care: Regarding the use of Vaseline (petroleum jelly) for maintaining the glans, it can be beneficial in certain situations. Vaseline can help keep the area moisturized, which is important for healing, especially if there is any dryness or irritation. However, it is crucial to ensure that the area is clean before applying any ointment. If you have phimosis (tight foreskin), using a gentle moisturizer can help prevent irritation, but it’s important to avoid excessive force when retracting the foreskin to prevent further injury.

4. When to Seek Medical Attention: If you notice any signs of infection, such as increased pain, discharge, or persistent redness, it is essential to seek medical attention. Additionally, if the color change does not improve over time or if you have concerns about the healing process, consulting a healthcare professional is advisable.

5. General Recommendations: Keep the area clean and dry, avoid irritants, and consider using a mild, fragrance-free soap for cleansing. If you experience any discomfort or have questions about your specific situation, it’s always best to consult with a healthcare provider who can provide personalized advice based on your condition.

In summary, the dark red color you are observing is likely a normal part of the healing process, indicating that new tissue is forming. Using Vaseline can be beneficial for moisture, but ensure that the area is clean before application. Always monitor for signs of infection and consult a healthcare professional if you have any concerns about your healing process.
