After the hernia surgery, there is adhesive residue from the breathable tape on the wound after the stitches were removed?
Hello doctor, I am currently 10 days post-operative from a left-sided hernia repair.
After taking a shower, I noticed that there is white residue from the breathable tape on the wound.
Will it come off on its own? Could it be harmful to the healing of the wound or affect the scar? I am hesitant to touch the wound, let alone remove the residue.
I hope you can help me with these concerns.
Thank you.

If the residue can be rolled off easily, for those with more sensitive skin, it is recommended to apply nail polish remover, which will make it easier to remove afterward.

After hernia surgery, it is common for patients to encounter residual adhesive from surgical tape or dressings. This is particularly true if the adhesive is still present ten days post-operation, as you mentioned. Here are some key points to consider regarding the residual adhesive and its implications for your recovery:
1. Self-Removal of Adhesive: In many cases, the adhesive residue will naturally come off on its own as the skin heals and regenerates. However, this process can take time, and it may not happen uniformly for everyone. If the adhesive does not come off by itself, it is generally safe to gently remove it, but caution is advised.
2. Impact on Wound Healing: Residual adhesive is unlikely to harm the wound or impede the healing process significantly. However, if the adhesive is causing irritation or if it traps moisture against the skin, it could potentially lead to complications such as skin irritation or infection. It is essential to keep the area clean and dry to promote optimal healing.
3. Scar Formation: The presence of adhesive residue is not expected to affect scar formation directly. Scarring is primarily influenced by factors such as the depth of the incision, the individual's healing response, and how well the wound is cared for during the healing process. If the adhesive is removed carefully and the wound is kept clean, it should not negatively impact the appearance of the scar.
4. When to Seek Medical Advice: If you notice any signs of infection (such as increased redness, swelling, warmth, or discharge from the wound), or if the adhesive is causing significant discomfort, it is advisable to consult your healthcare provider. They can assess the situation and provide guidance on the best course of action.
5. How to Remove Adhesive Safely: If you decide to remove the adhesive, here are some tips:
- Gentle Approach: Use a gentle touch to avoid pulling on the healing skin.
- Use of Oil or Adhesive Remover: Sometimes, applying a small amount of baby oil, mineral oil, or a commercial adhesive remover can help loosen the adhesive. Allow it to sit for a few minutes before gently wiping it away.
- Avoid Scrubbing: Do not scrub the area, as this can irritate the skin and potentially disrupt the healing process.
6. Post-Surgery Care: Continue to follow your surgeon's post-operative care instructions, including keeping the wound clean and dry, avoiding strenuous activities, and monitoring for any unusual symptoms.
In summary, while residual adhesive can be bothersome, it is generally not harmful to your recovery. If you have concerns or if the adhesive does not come off easily, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for personalized advice. They can provide reassurance and help ensure that your recovery proceeds smoothly.
