Delayed menstruation?

Hello, I would like to ask why my period is 10 days late.
It usually comes on the 30th or 29th of each month, but in April it arrived 4 days early on the 26th.
However, it did not come on May 26.
I had sexual intercourse on May 9 and May 30, both times using a condom.
I took pregnancy tests on May 29 and June 4, and both showed negative results.
It shouldn't be pregnancy causing my missed period, right? What other reasons could cause a delayed period?

Tila, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/06/05

Please retest for pregnancy.
If it is confirmed that you are not pregnant, it may be due to hormonal imbalances, which can also affect the regularity of your menstrual cycle.
There are many possible causes, including accidental consumption of herbal medicine-related foods, irregular lifestyle, insufficient sleep, excessive stress, being too busy or fatigued, dieting, over-exercising, and so on.
Sincerely, Dr.
Li-Cheng Lu, Taoyuan Hospital.

Delayed menstruation can be a source of concern for many women, and there are several potential reasons for a missed or delayed period beyond pregnancy. In your case, since you have taken pregnancy tests that returned negative results, it is important to consider other factors that could contribute to this delay.

1. Hormonal Imbalances: The menstrual cycle is regulated by a complex interplay of hormones, including estrogen and progesterone. Any disruption in these hormone levels can lead to irregularities in your cycle. Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders (hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism), or other endocrine issues can cause delayed menstruation.

2. Stress: Psychological stress can significantly impact your menstrual cycle. High levels of stress can affect the hypothalamus, which regulates the hormones responsible for menstruation. If you have been experiencing increased stress due to work, personal life, or other factors, this could be a contributing factor.

3. Weight Changes: Significant weight loss or gain can also affect your menstrual cycle. Low body weight, especially in athletes or those with eating disorders, can lead to missed periods. Conversely, obesity can also disrupt hormonal balance and lead to irregular cycles.

4. Lifestyle Factors: Changes in your lifestyle, such as increased physical activity, changes in diet, or travel, can also impact your menstrual cycle. If you have recently changed your exercise routine or diet, this could be a factor.

5. Medical Conditions: Certain medical conditions, such as uterine fibroids, endometriosis, or pelvic inflammatory disease, can also lead to menstrual irregularities. If you have any accompanying symptoms, such as pelvic pain or unusual discharge, it may be worth discussing these with your healthcare provider.

6. Medications: Some medications, including hormonal contraceptives, can affect your menstrual cycle. If you have recently started or stopped any medications, this could be a factor.

7. Age and Menopause: If you are approaching your late 30s or early 40s, perimenopause could be a consideration. This transitional phase can lead to irregular periods as your body begins to adjust to hormonal changes.

Given that you have had unprotected sexual intercourse, it is understandable to be concerned about pregnancy. However, since you have taken multiple pregnancy tests that have returned negative results, it is less likely that pregnancy is the cause of your delayed menstruation.
It is advisable to monitor your symptoms and consider scheduling an appointment with your healthcare provider. They can perform a thorough evaluation, including a physical examination and possibly blood tests to check hormone levels, thyroid function, and other relevant factors. This will help determine the underlying cause of your delayed menstruation and guide appropriate management.

In summary, while pregnancy is a common concern with a missed period, there are numerous other factors that can contribute to menstrual irregularities. Understanding these potential causes can help alleviate anxiety and lead to appropriate care. If the delay persists or if you experience any concerning symptoms, seeking medical advice is the best course of action.
