Does sexual activity affect implantation?

Hello Doctor: I would like to ask you a question.
I had intercourse with my husband on the day of ovulation, but before confirming if I am pregnant, we had sexual relations again.
We had intercourse on the day of ovulation, and then about 11 days later, we had sexual relations again (I reached orgasm, and my husband used a condom).
If fertilization occurred on the day of ovulation and implantation was successful afterward, will having intercourse about 11 days post-ovulation affect the previous fertilization? Today, my basal body temperature is 36.89°C, but the pregnancy test still shows a single line.
For example, on May 27, my temperature was 36.18°C (the lowest temperature), which I suspect was the day of ovulation, and we had intercourse that day.
Eleven days later, on June 7, we had intercourse again.
Will the sexual activity on June 7 affect the fertilization that occurred on May 27? I read online that implantation occurs about 6-7 days after ovulation.
If implantation was successful, will having intercourse with my husband 11 days post-ovulation cause any issues, even though he used a condom and I reached orgasm? Could this lead to uterine contractions that might cause a miscarriage of the successfully fertilized egg?

The aforementioned sexual activity does not affect implantation.

Intercourse after ovulation can raise questions regarding its impact on implantation and the overall success of conception. To address your concerns, it’s important to understand the timing of ovulation, fertilization, and implantation, as well as the physiological responses that occur during these processes.

Ovulation typically occurs about 14 days before the start of your next menstrual period. On the day of ovulation, an egg is released from the ovary and is available for fertilization for about 12 to 24 hours. If sperm is present in the reproductive tract during this time, fertilization can occur. Once fertilization happens, the fertilized egg (now called a zygote) travels down the fallopian tube towards the uterus, where it will implant into the uterine lining. This process of implantation usually occurs about 6 to 10 days after ovulation.

In your case, you mentioned having intercourse on the day of ovulation and then again approximately 11 days later. If fertilization occurred on the day of ovulation, the zygote would be in the process of traveling to the uterus and preparing for implantation during the time of your second intercourse. Importantly, the presence of sperm from the second intercourse would not affect the already fertilized egg, as the sperm from the first intercourse would still be viable and could lead to fertilization if ovulation had occurred.

Regarding your concerns about potential impacts on implantation, it is crucial to note that the act of intercourse itself, especially if it involves a condom, is unlikely to cause any harm to a fertilized egg or disrupt the implantation process. The uterus is a resilient organ, and normal sexual activity does not typically induce contractions strong enough to dislodge a fertilized egg that has successfully implanted.

You also mentioned achieving orgasm during intercourse. While orgasm can cause uterine contractions, these contractions are generally not strong enough to interfere with implantation. The body is designed to protect the developing embryo, and the uterine environment is quite accommodating during the early stages of pregnancy.

As for your basal body temperature (BBT), a sustained increase in BBT after ovulation can indicate that your body is in the luteal phase, which is the phase following ovulation. If your temperature remains elevated for 14 days or more, it could suggest that implantation has occurred. However, a single negative pregnancy test does not definitively indicate that you are not pregnant, especially if it is taken too early. It is advisable to wait a few days and test again, as hormone levels may not be high enough to detect early pregnancy.

In summary, having intercourse after ovulation, particularly if it is protected, is unlikely to affect the success of implantation from a previous fertilization. The physiological processes involved in fertilization and implantation are robust, and normal sexual activity does not typically pose a risk to a developing embryo. If you have further concerns or if your period is delayed, it would be wise to consult with a healthcare provider for personalized advice and potential follow-up testing.
