Is it vaginitis?
Hello! I started taking oral contraceptives in April.
After my period in May, I forgot to continue taking them, and my boyfriend ejaculated outside.
The next day, I took emergency contraception.
A few days later, I resumed taking the oral contraceptives.
Before my period in June, I experienced some external vaginal itching, which seemed like vaginitis, but it resolved after my period, so I didn't see a doctor.
After my period, which ended about a week ago, I've been experiencing a small amount of dark red discharge with a blood-like odor.
On the last day of my period, I started taking the oral contraceptives again.
Today, I felt some pain during intercourse with my boyfriend, so I stopped.
I would like to know if the discharge is related to the contraceptive pills.
Should I stop taking them? Is there a problem if I experience pain during intercourse with my boyfriend?

Hello, it is recommended that you visit the outpatient clinic for an internal examination to determine the nature of the discharge.
Please bring your medication to the clinic and inquire about the correct dosage and administration before deciding whether to discontinue the medication.

Understanding vaginal discomfort, especially in the context of birth control, can be quite complex. Based on your description, it seems that you have been experiencing some unusual symptoms since starting and then resuming your birth control pills. Let's break down the potential causes and implications of your symptoms.
Firstly, it is important to note that hormonal contraceptives, such as birth control pills, can indeed cause changes in your vaginal health. These changes can manifest as vaginal dryness, irritation, or even infections like yeast infections or bacterial vaginosis. The hormonal fluctuations caused by starting, stopping, and then resuming birth control can disrupt the natural balance of bacteria and yeast in the vagina, leading to discomfort or unusual discharge.
You mentioned experiencing external itching and discomfort, which could suggest a yeast infection or another type of vaginitis. The fact that these symptoms improved after your menstrual period could indicate that the hormonal changes associated with your cycle are influencing your symptoms. However, the presence of deep red discharge with a blood-like odor is concerning and warrants further investigation.
Regarding the pain during intercourse, this could be related to several factors, including vaginal dryness, irritation, or an underlying infection. Pain during sex, known as dyspareunia, can be caused by a variety of issues, including hormonal changes from birth control, infections, or even psychological factors. It is essential to address this pain, as it can impact your sexual health and relationship.
As for the discharge you are experiencing, it is crucial to consider that while hormonal contraceptives can cause changes in discharge, the presence of blood or a strong odor could indicate an infection or another underlying issue that should not be ignored. It is advisable to consult a healthcare provider to rule out any infections or other conditions that may require treatment.
In terms of whether you should stop taking the birth control pills, this is a decision that should be made in consultation with your healthcare provider. They can assess your symptoms, provide a proper diagnosis, and help you weigh the benefits and risks of continuing or changing your contraceptive method.
In summary, your symptoms could be related to the hormonal changes from your birth control pills, but they could also indicate an infection or another issue that needs to be addressed. It is essential to seek medical advice to ensure that you receive appropriate care and to discuss your contraceptive options. Remember, your health and comfort are paramount, and a healthcare provider can help you navigate these concerns effectively.
