Severe pain during landing after root canal treatment?
Hello, doctor.
I previously underwent two root canal treatments on my left molar.
After the first treatment, I experienced severe pain during the descent of a flight.
I then had a second treatment, which included re-treatment, and the follow-up X-ray showed no lesions.
However, I still experience intense pain during the descent of a flight when reaching a certain altitude.
I'm wondering if you have encountered this issue before and how it can be resolved.
Thank you.

Hello: I haven't encountered this issue before, but I think it might be possible that the original lesion hasn't completely healed.
We can wait a while longer to see.

Experiencing severe pain during flight landings after undergoing root canal treatment can be quite distressing. This phenomenon is often related to changes in air pressure that occur during descent, which can affect the dental structures, particularly if there is any lingering inflammation or sensitivity in the treated tooth.
When you undergo a root canal treatment, the goal is to remove the infected or inflamed pulp from the tooth and seal it to prevent further infection. However, even after the procedure, some patients may experience residual sensitivity or discomfort, especially when exposed to rapid changes in pressure, such as during a flight landing. This discomfort can be exacerbated if there is any remaining inflammation in the surrounding tissues or if the tooth has not fully healed.
Here are some potential solutions and considerations for managing this issue:
1. Consult Your Dentist: Since you have already undergone two root canal treatments, it is crucial to follow up with your dentist or an endodontist. They can assess the tooth for any signs of complications, such as reinfection or incomplete healing. An X-ray may be necessary to evaluate the condition of the tooth and surrounding bone.
2. Pain Management: If you anticipate flying, consider taking over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, before your flight. This can help manage any discomfort that may arise during descent. However, always consult with your healthcare provider before taking any medication, especially if you have other health conditions or are taking other medications.
3. Pressure Equalization Techniques: During descent, try to equalize the pressure in your ears and sinuses, as this can also affect the pain you feel in your teeth. Techniques such as yawning, swallowing, or chewing gum can help alleviate pressure changes.
4. Avoiding Flights Immediately After Treatment: If possible, avoid flying for at least a few days after undergoing dental procedures. This allows your body time to heal and can reduce the likelihood of experiencing pain during a flight.
5. Consider a Dental Specialist: If the pain persists despite following the above recommendations, it may be beneficial to consult a dental specialist, such as an oral surgeon or a pain management specialist. They can provide further insights into your condition and suggest more targeted treatments.
6. Follow-Up Care: Ensure that you attend all follow-up appointments with your dentist. They can monitor your healing process and intervene if any complications arise.
7. Hydration and Moisture: Staying hydrated during your flight can help maintain moisture in your mouth and may reduce discomfort. Consider using a saline nasal spray or a humidifier if you're in a dry environment.
In summary, while experiencing pain during flight landings after root canal treatment can be concerning, it is essential to address the issue with your dental care provider. They can help determine if there are any underlying issues that need to be treated and provide you with strategies to manage pain effectively. Remember that proper follow-up care and communication with your healthcare providers are key to ensuring a smooth recovery and minimizing discomfort during future flights.
