Postoperative wound after hemorrhoid surgery?
After undergoing surgery for internal and external hemorrhoids on July 2, my body temperature remained between 37.2 and 37.9 degrees Celsius during the five days of hospitalization.
Fortunately, after returning home, my temperature dropped below 37 degrees.
However, there are two swollen areas at the anal site, with one being significantly larger.
After the physician addressed it, the swelling reduced, but after 2 to 3 days, the swelling returned, and even the originally smaller one has increased in size.
Is this situation normal, doctor? Additionally, I will be traveling abroad in three weeks; are there any precautions I should take? Thank you for your time in responding.

About a week after undergoing hemorrhoid surgery, the anal area wound has not fully healed.
It is possible that bowel movements or other factors may affect blood circulation near the wound, leading to swelling or inflammatory responses around the area.
This is a common part of the postoperative recovery process.
In about one to two weeks, the wound should be completely healed before your trip abroad.
During your travels, be sure to maintain proper hygiene in the anal region and follow your normal routine.

Post-surgery recovery from hemorrhoid surgery can be a challenging process, and it’s essential to understand the normal healing process and what signs may indicate complications. After undergoing hemorrhoid surgery, it is not uncommon to experience some swelling and discomfort around the surgical site. The swelling you are experiencing, especially if it fluctuates in size, can be a normal part of the healing process. However, persistent or increasing swelling, especially if accompanied by pain, redness, or discharge, could indicate an infection or other complications that should be evaluated by your healthcare provider.
In your case, the fact that the swelling initially decreased after medical intervention but then returned could suggest that the body is still responding to the surgical trauma. It’s important to monitor the situation closely. If the swelling continues to increase or if you experience significant pain, fever, or any unusual symptoms, it would be prudent to consult your surgeon or healthcare provider as soon as possible.
Regarding your upcoming travel plans three weeks post-surgery, there are several considerations to keep in mind to ensure a safe and comfortable trip:
1. Consult Your Surgeon: Before traveling, it’s crucial to have a follow-up appointment with your surgeon. They can assess your healing progress and provide personalized advice based on your specific situation.
2. Travel Comfort: Long periods of sitting, such as during flights or long car rides, can exacerbate discomfort. Consider planning for frequent breaks to stand, stretch, and walk around to improve circulation and reduce pressure on the surgical site.
3. Pain Management: Ensure you have a plan for managing pain during your travels. Bring any prescribed medications, and consider over-the-counter pain relief options if appropriate. Always consult your doctor before taking any new medications.
4. Hygiene: Maintaining proper hygiene is critical, especially after surgery. Ensure you have access to clean facilities, and consider bringing along any necessary supplies for wound care.
5. Dietary Considerations: After hemorrhoid surgery, it’s essential to maintain a diet high in fiber and hydration to prevent constipation, which can strain the surgical site. Plan your meals accordingly while traveling.
6. Avoid Straining: Be mindful of your bowel movements. If you experience constipation, consider using stool softeners or fiber supplements as recommended by your healthcare provider.
7. Emergency Contacts: Have a plan in case of an emergency. Know where the nearest medical facilities are located at your travel destination, and keep your healthcare provider’s contact information handy.
8. Rest and Recovery: While it’s tempting to enjoy your travels, listen to your body. If you feel fatigued or unwell, prioritize rest and recovery over activities.
In summary, while some swelling post-hemorrhoid surgery can be normal, it’s essential to monitor your symptoms and consult with your healthcare provider if you have concerns. As you prepare for your trip, prioritize comfort, hygiene, and proper pain management to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. Safe travels!
