Menstrual intercourse
This month, my menstrual flow has been very light, almost nonexistent.
After having sexual intercourse on the third and fifth days of my period, I started to experience heavy bleeding.
Now that my period should have ended, I am still experiencing a lot of bleeding.
What could be the cause of this? Could it be a bacterial infection or endometriosis?

Abnormal menstrual bleeding after intercourse can be concerning and may arise from various causes. In your case, experiencing minimal menstrual flow followed by significant bleeding after sexual activity raises several possibilities that warrant consideration.
Firstly, it is essential to understand that menstrual cycles can vary significantly from month to month due to various factors, including hormonal fluctuations, stress, changes in weight, or underlying health conditions. A very light period could indicate hormonal imbalances, which might be influenced by factors such as stress, diet, or even changes in physical activity.
The bleeding you experienced after intercourse could be attributed to several potential causes:
1. Cervical or Vaginal Trauma: During intercourse, especially if there is insufficient lubrication or if the intercourse is vigorous, it is possible to cause minor trauma to the vaginal walls or the cervix, leading to bleeding. This type of bleeding is usually light and should resolve quickly.
2. Cervical Erosion or Ectropion: This condition occurs when the cells from the inside of the cervical canal grow on the outside of the cervix. It can lead to increased sensitivity and bleeding, particularly after intercourse.
3. Infections: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or other infections of the reproductive tract can cause inflammation and bleeding. Conditions such as cervicitis (inflammation of the cervix) or vaginitis can lead to abnormal bleeding, especially after sexual activity.
4. Endometriosis: This condition occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus, which can lead to painful periods and abnormal bleeding. If you have a history of painful periods or pelvic pain, this could be a consideration.
5. Uterine Fibroids or Polyps: These benign growths in the uterus can cause heavy bleeding and may be exacerbated by sexual activity. They can lead to changes in menstrual flow and should be evaluated if suspected.
6. Hormonal Imbalances: Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or thyroid disorders can lead to irregular menstrual cycles and abnormal bleeding patterns.
Given that you mentioned the bleeding has persisted beyond your expected menstrual period, it is crucial to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include a pelvic exam, Pap smear, and possibly imaging studies like an ultrasound to assess for any structural abnormalities in the reproductive organs.
In summary, while some causes of post-coital bleeding may be benign, persistent or heavy bleeding warrants further investigation to rule out more serious conditions. It is essential to consult with a healthcare professional to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms and receive appropriate treatment. Early diagnosis and management can help prevent complications and provide peace of mind.
