What is wrong with the tongue?

Recently, I have been feeling a rough texture on the inside of my gums near my molars when I lick my tongue.
When I looked in the mirror, I noticed a small white spot and a hole on the side of my tongue.
I ate pineapple yesterday, which was very painful, but today it doesn't hurt as much.
What could be the cause of this? I've also been staying up late lately.

The symptoms you are experiencing with your tongue, including the rough texture on the inner gums and the presence of a small white spot and a hole on the side of your tongue, can be attributed to several potential causes. It is important to consider both the physical and lifestyle factors that may be contributing to your discomfort.

1. Oral Hygiene and Irritation: The roughness you feel when licking the inner gums could be due to irritation or inflammation. This can occur from various factors, such as food particles getting trapped, plaque buildup, or even minor injuries from biting your tongue or from abrasive foods. Pineapple, for example, is acidic and can cause irritation to the soft tissues of the mouth, especially if you have any existing abrasions or ulcers.

2. Canker Sores: The white spot you observed could be a canker sore, which is a common type of ulcer that can develop on the tongue or inside the mouth. Canker sores can be triggered by stress, hormonal changes, certain foods, or even deficiencies in vitamins such as B12, folate, or iron. They are usually painful and can make eating or drinking uncomfortable.

3. Geographic Tongue: The presence of a "hole" or irregularity on the tongue could also suggest a condition known as geographic tongue, where patches of the tongue's surface become smooth and red, surrounded by a white border. This condition is generally harmless but can be sensitive to certain foods, including acidic fruits like pineapple.

4. Fungal Infections: Another possibility is a fungal infection, such as oral thrush, which can cause white patches on the tongue and inside the mouth. This is more common in individuals with weakened immune systems or those who have recently taken antibiotics.

5. Lifestyle Factors: You mentioned that you have been going to bed later than usual. Poor sleep can impact your immune system and overall health, making you more susceptible to infections and irritations. Additionally, stress and fatigue can exacerbate oral health issues.

6. Dehydration and Dry Mouth: If you are not drinking enough water, you may experience dry mouth, which can lead to discomfort and increase the risk of oral health problems. Saliva plays a crucial role in maintaining oral health by washing away food particles and bacteria.

Recommendations:
- Maintain Good Oral Hygiene: Brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss daily. Consider using an antibacterial mouthwash to help reduce bacteria in your mouth.

- Avoid Irritating Foods: Since you experienced pain after eating pineapple, it may be wise to avoid acidic or spicy foods until your symptoms resolve.

- Stay Hydrated: Ensure you are drinking enough water throughout the day to keep your mouth moist and support overall health.

- Monitor Symptoms: Keep an eye on the white spot and any changes in your symptoms. If it persists for more than a week or worsens, it would be advisable to consult a healthcare professional or a dentist for a thorough examination.

- Consider Stress Management: If you suspect that stress or lack of sleep is contributing to your symptoms, explore relaxation techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, or gentle exercise to help improve your overall well-being.

In summary, while your symptoms may be related to common oral health issues, it is essential to monitor them closely and seek professional advice if they do not improve or if you have any concerns. Taking proactive steps in maintaining your oral hygiene and addressing lifestyle factors can significantly contribute to alleviating your discomfort.
