Menstrual issues

Hello, my last menstrual period started on April 11, and I haven't had my period in May, June, or July.
I have had sexual intercourse, but we always used condoms, and I have taken two pregnancy tests, both of which were negative.
I consulted a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner in March and took a few packets of medicine, after which my period returned.
However, I have been taking the medicine for several days now, and my period still hasn't come.
I would like to know if there is a possibility of pregnancy or if there could be another reason.
Thank you for your response.

Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, the causes of abnormal menstrual cycles may include pregnancy, polycystic ovary syndrome, hormonal imbalances, emotional factors, diet, age, and others.
However, it is crucial to rule out conditions such as uterine tumors or endometrial hyperplasia.
If menstruation does not occur, it is advisable to consult a physician for further evaluation.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health, Dr.
Zhang.

Menstrual irregularities can be concerning and may arise from a variety of causes. In your case, you mentioned that your last menstrual period was on April 11, and since then, you have not had a period in May or June. You also noted that you have engaged in sexual activity with protection and have taken two pregnancy tests, both of which were negative. Additionally, you have consulted with a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner and have been taking herbal remedies.

First, it's important to understand that menstrual cycles can be affected by numerous factors, including stress, hormonal imbalances, changes in weight, exercise habits, and underlying medical conditions. Given that you have had a recent history of irregular cycles, it is possible that your body is experiencing fluctuations in hormone levels that can disrupt the normal menstrual cycle.

1. Pregnancy Consideration: Since you have used condoms consistently and have had negative pregnancy tests, the likelihood of pregnancy is low. However, no contraceptive method is 100% effective, and factors such as condom breakage or slippage can occur. If you continue to miss your period, it may be worth repeating a pregnancy test after a week or consulting with a healthcare provider for a blood test, which can detect pregnancy earlier and more accurately than home tests.

2. Hormonal Imbalance: Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, or other hormonal imbalances can lead to irregular periods. If you have a history of irregular cycles or other symptoms (like weight gain, acne, or excessive hair growth), it may be worthwhile to discuss these possibilities with your healthcare provider.

3. Stress and Lifestyle Factors: Stress is a significant factor that can affect menstrual cycles. Emotional or physical stress can lead to missed periods. Additionally, significant changes in weight, whether loss or gain, can also impact your cycle. If you have experienced any recent life changes, it may be contributing to your irregularity.

4. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM): While TCM can be beneficial for some individuals, its effects can vary widely. If you have been taking herbal remedies, it is essential to ensure that they are appropriate for your condition and that they do not interfere with your menstrual cycle. Some herbs can have hormonal effects, which may either help or hinder your cycle.

5. Consulting a Healthcare Provider: Given the duration of your missed periods and the ongoing concerns, it would be advisable to consult with a healthcare provider. They can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include blood tests to check hormone levels, a pelvic exam, or imaging studies if necessary. This will help identify any underlying issues that may be causing your menstrual irregularities.

In summary, while pregnancy seems unlikely given your precautions and test results, other factors such as hormonal imbalances, stress, or lifestyle changes could be contributing to your missed periods. It is essential to seek medical advice to explore these possibilities further and to ensure that any underlying conditions are addressed. Regular monitoring and open communication with your healthcare provider can help you regain a regular menstrual cycle and address any concerns you may have.
