Red and itchy skin?
Hello Dr.
Lee: Around May, I started to develop small red bumps on my chest that looked like acne and were very itchy.
Then it spread to my neck, abdomen, and sides of my waist.
I consulted a dermatologist, but the topical and oral medications were ineffective.
Later, I tried traditional Chinese medicine and applied SINBABY Lotion, which only slightly improved the situation, but the problem was not completely resolved.
The scars from the bumps are still very noticeable on my skin, and the skin on my neck and arms has dark patches that feel rough to the touch.
I still do not know what illness I have or what caused this condition.
1.
Could the appearance of these small red bumps be related to hot weather? What condition could this be?
2.
Are the dark patches on my skin due to melanin deposition? How long will it take for them to fade?

Hello: Based on the textual description, it is not possible to accurately diagnose the specific skin condition.
During the summer, high temperatures can easily lead to various skin issues.
After skin inflammation, it is possible to have post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which can take varying amounts of time to resolve depending on the severity of the inflammation; it may take as little as a few weeks or as long as several months.
If the skin condition continues to be poor, it is advisable to consult a nearby dermatologist for a confirmed diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
Thank you!

Understanding skin issues, particularly red, itchy bumps, can be quite complex due to the variety of potential causes and treatments available. Based on your description, it sounds like you are experiencing a condition that could be related to several dermatological issues, including but not limited to folliculitis, heat rash, or even an allergic reaction.
1. Causes of Red, Itchy Bumps: The appearance of small, red, itchy bumps on the skin can often be attributed to several factors. One common cause is folliculitis, which is the inflammation of hair follicles. This can occur due to bacterial infections, fungal infections, or irritation from shaving or tight clothing. Another possibility is heat rash, which occurs when sweat gets trapped in the pores, leading to small red bumps, especially in hot and humid weather. Allergic reactions to products such as lotions, soaps, or even laundry detergents can also manifest as itchy red bumps.
2. Weather Influence: Yes, hot weather can exacerbate skin conditions. Increased sweating can lead to clogged pores, which may result in the formation of red bumps. Additionally, if you are prone to conditions like eczema or psoriasis, heat can trigger flare-ups, leading to more pronounced symptoms.
3. Skin Discoloration: The dark patches you mentioned on your neck and arms could indeed be a result of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. This occurs when the skin darkens in response to inflammation or injury, such as from acne or other skin irritations. The duration for these dark spots to fade can vary significantly depending on skin type, the severity of the initial condition, and how well the skin is cared for afterward. Typically, these spots can take several weeks to months to fade, but in some cases, they may persist longer.
4. Treatment Options: Since you have already seen a dermatologist and tried both Western and traditional Chinese medicine without complete resolution, it may be beneficial to revisit your dermatologist for a follow-up. They may consider alternative treatments such as topical corticosteroids for inflammation, antihistamines for itching, or even prescription-strength topical retinoids to help with skin texture and pigmentation.
5. Self-Care and Prevention: In the meantime, consider implementing a gentle skincare routine. Use mild, fragrance-free cleansers and moisturizers to avoid further irritation. Avoid scratching the affected areas, as this can worsen inflammation and lead to more pigmentation issues. Wearing loose-fitting clothing can also help reduce friction and irritation on the skin.
6. When to Seek Further Help: If your symptoms persist or worsen, or if you develop new symptoms such as fever, swelling, or pus-filled lesions, it is crucial to seek immediate medical attention. A second opinion from another dermatologist may also provide new insights or treatment options that could be more effective for your condition.
In summary, while the red, itchy bumps you are experiencing could be linked to various causes, including heat and potential allergic reactions, it is essential to continue working closely with your healthcare provider to determine the most effective treatment plan. Remember that skin conditions can take time to heal, and patience, along with proper care, is key to achieving clearer skin.
