Areola Changes: Concerns for Adolescent Males - Surgery

There is an issue with the areola?

Hello Doctor, I recently noticed that the area around my left nipple is feeling hard in a circular pattern.
My left nipple doesn't easily protrude; it only did once while swimming, and since then it hasn't really changed.
Is this normal for the areola? I tend to press on it more often, and sometimes I experience a sharp pain in my left chest.
Additionally, I've noticed green veins appearing on my chest, which are connected to the left areola, and the area where they connect appears darker.
I am a 12-year-old boy, and I wonder if this is related to my body type since I am a bit overweight.
What could be going on? I would appreciate a prompt response, thank you!

Hello: It could be male myopathy, but the general surgery outpatient clinic at Changhua Hospital of the Ministry of Health and Welfare is concerned about you.

It's understandable to be concerned about changes in your body, especially during adolescence when many physical changes are occurring. The development of breast tissue in adolescent males, known as gynecomastia, can be a common occurrence due to hormonal fluctuations. This condition can cause swelling or tenderness in the breast area, and it may lead to the feeling of hardness or sensitivity around the areola.

In your case, the hard feeling around the areola and the occasional sharp pain could be related to gynecomastia, which is often temporary and resolves on its own as hormone levels stabilize. The presence of green veins and a darker color in the area could simply be a result of increased blood flow or changes in skin pigmentation, which can also occur during puberty.
It's important to note that during puberty, males experience a surge in testosterone, which can lead to various physical changes, including the development of breast tissue. This is usually not a cause for concern unless it is accompanied by significant pain, discharge from the nipple, or if the swelling persists beyond a couple of years.
However, since you mentioned that you are experiencing discomfort and have noticed changes that are concerning to you, it would be wise to consult a healthcare professional. A doctor can perform a physical examination and, if necessary, order tests to rule out any underlying conditions. They can also provide reassurance and guidance on what to expect as you continue to grow and develop.

In addition to gynecomastia, other factors such as weight gain can influence breast tissue development. Being overweight can lead to increased fat deposits in the breast area, which may also contribute to the appearance of fullness or swelling. Maintaining a healthy weight through a balanced diet and regular exercise can be beneficial not only for your physical health but also for your overall well-being.

Lastly, it's essential to communicate openly with your parents or guardians about your concerns. They can help you seek medical advice and support you through this period of change. Remember, many adolescents experience similar concerns, and you are not alone in this journey. Seeking professional advice will provide you with the best course of action and peace of mind.

I am 15 years old and I am obese. I have an inverted left nipple. Recently, I noticed that both areolas have become bumpy and uneven, with small protrusions around the areolas. What could be the issue?

Dr. Yuan Tianmin reply Breast and Thyroid
There are naturally some small rough spots on the areola; these are the openings of the glands, so there's no need to be overly concerned. You're 15 years old, so you shouldn't worry too much about your areola.
