There is a crackling sound in the left ear when chewing?

Hello, I would like to ask about a sound I sometimes hear near my left ear while chewing.
It sounds like bones grinding against each other.
This occurs intermittently and has been happening for several years.
I'm not sure if it's an ear issue or related to the bones.
Thank you for your response.

Hello, the most common issue is small earwax stuck near the eardrum, which can cause sounds during chewing.
It is also possible that the sounds are coming from the cartilage near the chewing muscles.
I recommend consulting an otolaryngologist to confirm if there are any issues with the ear.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

Crackling sounds in the ear, particularly when chewing, can be a perplexing issue that many individuals experience. Based on your description, it seems that the sound is localized to your left ear and occurs intermittently during activities such as chewing. This phenomenon can be attributed to several potential causes, primarily involving the ear and the surrounding structures.

One of the most common reasons for crackling or popping sounds in the ear during chewing is related to the Eustachian tube, which connects the middle ear to the back of the throat. The Eustachian tube helps equalize pressure in the middle ear and drains fluid. When you chew, yawn, or swallow, the muscles around the Eustachian tube contract, allowing air to flow in and out, which can create a popping or crackling sound. If the Eustachian tube is not functioning properly, it may lead to a sensation of fullness or pressure in the ear, along with abnormal sounds.

Another possible cause could be related to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), which is located near the ear. The TMJ connects the jawbone to the skull and is responsible for movements such as chewing. Dysfunction or inflammation in this joint can lead to sounds such as clicking, popping, or crackling when the jaw moves. This is particularly relevant if you notice the sounds coincide with chewing or jaw movements.

Additionally, the presence of earwax (cerumen) can also contribute to abnormal sounds in the ear. If earwax builds up and becomes impacted, it can interfere with sound transmission and create sensations of fullness or crackling sounds. However, you mentioned that you have not experienced any blockage or significant earwax issues.

In terms of solutions, here are some recommendations:
1. Eustachian Tube Dysfunction: If you suspect that your symptoms are related to Eustachian tube dysfunction, you can try techniques such as swallowing, yawning, or performing the Valsalva maneuver (gently blowing with your mouth closed and nose pinched) to help equalize pressure in the ears.

2. TMJ Management: If TMJ dysfunction is suspected, consider consulting a dentist or an oral and maxillofacial specialist. They may recommend treatments such as physical therapy, bite guards, or other interventions to alleviate symptoms.

3. Earwax Removal: If earwax buildup is a concern, it may be beneficial to have your ears examined by a healthcare professional. They can safely remove any impacted wax and provide guidance on ear hygiene.

4. Medical Evaluation: Given that this issue has persisted for several years, it may be wise to consult an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist. They can perform a thorough examination, including hearing tests and imaging if necessary, to rule out any underlying conditions.

5. Monitoring Symptoms: Keep a record of when the crackling sounds occur, their frequency, and any associated activities (like chewing or yawning). This information can be helpful for your healthcare provider in diagnosing the issue.

In conclusion, while crackling sounds in the ear during chewing can be benign, they may also indicate underlying issues related to the Eustachian tube or TMJ. A thorough evaluation by a healthcare professional is recommended to determine the exact cause and appropriate treatment. Remember, early intervention can often lead to better outcomes, so don’t hesitate to seek help if your symptoms persist or worsen.
