Side effects after the removal of a double J stent?

Hello, on the first day after the removal of my double J stent, my urine was normal, but on the second night, I suddenly experienced some pain in my right kidney and noticed hematuria while urinating.
However, after drinking more water, my urine was normal again the next morning.
Is this condition a side effect of the removal of the double J stent? How long does it typically take for things to return to normal? By the way, I had the double J stent placed due to a stone in my right ureter.

Awei, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/07/25

Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology

Avi: Hello, removing the catheter may lead to blood clots, which could result in your symptoms.
Drinking more water can help improve this situation.
Additionally, there may be small kidney stones that could have been expelled during the catheter removal, causing discomfort.
If there are no blood clots or stones, improvement typically occurs within 1-2 days.
If there are issues such as stone fragments, they need to be addressed before improvement can be expected.
If you have any further questions or need clarification, feel free to ask, and we can discuss and research together.

After the removal of a Double J (DJ) catheter, it is not uncommon to experience some discomfort or changes in urinary symptoms. The DJ catheter is often placed to facilitate the passage of urine from the kidney to the bladder, especially in cases of ureteral obstruction, such as from kidney stones. When the catheter is removed, the body may take some time to adjust, and various symptoms can arise.

In your case, experiencing right flank pain and hematuria (blood in urine) after the removal of the DJ catheter can be attributed to several factors. First, the removal process itself can cause some irritation to the urinary tract, which may lead to temporary discomfort or bleeding. Additionally, if there were any residual stones or fragments left in the ureter, they could also cause pain and bleeding as they move through the urinary system.

The fact that your urine returned to normal after increased hydration is a positive sign. Staying well-hydrated can help flush out any remaining debris and reduce irritation in the urinary tract. It is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If the pain persists, or if you notice significant changes in your urine, such as increased blood, clots, or severe pain, it is crucial to contact your healthcare provider. They may want to perform imaging studies or other evaluations to ensure that there are no complications, such as a blockage or infection.

Typically, any discomfort or minor bleeding should resolve within a few days to a week after catheter removal. However, each individual's recovery can vary based on factors such as the extent of the initial condition, the duration the catheter was in place, and individual healing responses. If you continue to experience symptoms beyond a week or if they worsen, it would be advisable to seek medical attention.

In summary, while some discomfort and changes in urinary symptoms can be expected after the removal of a DJ catheter, it is essential to monitor your condition and seek medical advice if symptoms persist or worsen. Your healthcare provider can offer guidance tailored to your specific situation and ensure that your recovery proceeds smoothly.
