Feeling of pus formation at the extraction site after wisdom tooth removal?

Hello, doctor.
I had my wisdom teeth removed about three days ago, and it seems that there is some pus near the stitches at the wound site.
My saliva also has an unusual odor, but there is no swelling or pain.
Is this a normal occurrence?

After having wisdom teeth removed, if the wound is purulent and there is an unpleasant odor in the mouth, it may indicate inflammation or infection at the site, or food debris may be trapped in the wound.
It is advisable to return to the dental office for a thorough examination by the dentist.

After wisdom tooth extraction, it is not uncommon to experience a variety of symptoms as your body heals. However, the presence of pus, especially if accompanied by an unusual odor, can be a sign of infection, even if you are not experiencing pain or swelling. Let's break down the situation and provide some insights into what you might be experiencing.

1. Understanding Pus Formation: Pus is typically a thick fluid that can be a sign of infection. It consists of dead white blood cells, bacteria, and tissue debris. If you notice pus around the extraction site, it is essential to consider the possibility of an infection, even if you do not feel pain or swelling. The absence of these symptoms does not rule out an infection, as some infections can be mild and may not present with the typical signs of inflammation.

2. Odor and Taste: The unusual taste and odor in your mouth can also indicate that something is not right. After a tooth extraction, it is normal for the area to feel sensitive and for there to be some residual blood or healing tissue. However, if the taste is foul or reminiscent of decay, it may suggest that food particles are trapped in the extraction site or that there is an infection developing.

3. Healing Process: The healing process after wisdom tooth extraction can vary significantly from person to person. Generally, the first few days post-surgery are critical, and while some discomfort, swelling, and minor bleeding can be expected, the presence of pus is not typical. Healing usually progresses with the formation of a blood clot in the socket, which is essential for proper healing. If this clot is disturbed or if bacteria enter the socket, it can lead to complications such as dry socket or infection.

4. When to Seek Help: Given your symptoms, it is advisable to contact your dentist or oral surgeon as soon as possible. They can assess the extraction site and determine if there is an infection that requires treatment. They may recommend a course of antibiotics if an infection is confirmed. Additionally, they can provide guidance on how to care for the extraction site to promote healing and prevent further complications.

5. Post-Extraction Care: To help prevent infections after wisdom tooth extraction, it is crucial to maintain good oral hygiene. This includes gently rinsing your mouth with warm salt water after the first 24 hours, avoiding vigorous rinsing or spitting, and being cautious about what you eat. Soft foods are recommended, and you should avoid anything that could irritate the extraction site, such as hard, crunchy, or spicy foods.

In summary, while some discomfort and odd sensations can be part of the healing process after wisdom tooth extraction, the presence of pus and an unusual odor are concerning signs that warrant further evaluation. It is always better to err on the side of caution and consult with your dental professional to ensure that your recovery is on track and to address any potential complications early on.
