Menstrual issues
I usually keep track of my menstrual cycle, and my average cycle length has been around 28 days.
However, this year, I've noticed that my cycles have been getting longer, even extending to 40 days (currently averaging 33 days).
Is this normal? Last week, I had clear, white, mucus-like discharge.
According to my calculations (33 days), my period should have started today, but it hasn't.
I had sexual intercourse on the 20th, believing it was a safe period, so I didn't use protection.
A few days ago, I started feeling some lower abdominal bloating and discomfort, but my period still hasn't arrived.
Over the past few days, I've been experiencing a clear, milky discharge with no particular odor.
I only noticed a small amount of blood on the toilet paper once, and then it stopped.
I've been trying to avoid cold foods and water, but I've been taking cold showers.
Could this still have an impact?

Hello: (1) The menstrual cycle in the ovaries consists of the follicular phase, ovulatory phase, luteal phase, and menstrual phase.
As long as all four phases are completed, regardless of their duration, it can be considered normal.
Typically, after the decline in serum progesterone levels, the inhibition on the hypothalamus is lifted, and the hypothalamus begins to secrete gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH).
A new cycle then begins.
If there are other factors inhibiting the hypothalamus from secreting this releasing factor, the menstrual cycle may be prolonged or halted.
This is usually caused by excessive psychological stress or endocrine disorders.
(2) Excessive psychological stress or endocrine disorders can also lead to a lack of secretion of luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone, resulting in an anovulatory phase, which can cause a missed period or menstrual irregularities.
In such cases, it is advisable to seek treatment to induce menstruation.
Taking cold showers does not affect the menstrual cycle.
Thank you for your letter!

Understanding irregular menstrual cycles can be complex, as many factors can influence the regularity and characteristics of a woman's menstrual cycle. Based on your description, it seems you have experienced a shift from a typical 28-day cycle to an average of 33 days, with some cycles extending to 40 days. This change can be concerning, especially if it is accompanied by other symptoms such as abdominal discomfort and unusual discharge.
Firstly, it is important to note that menstrual cycles can naturally vary in length due to several factors, including hormonal fluctuations, stress, changes in weight, exercise habits, and even diet. A cycle that ranges from 21 to 35 days is generally considered normal, so while your cycle has lengthened, it may still fall within the normal range. However, significant changes in cycle length, especially if they are accompanied by other symptoms, should be evaluated further.
The presence of clear, white, and stretchy discharge, often described as resembling egg whites, is typically associated with ovulation. This type of discharge is normal and indicates that your body is preparing for a potential pregnancy. The absence of menstruation following ovulation can be due to several reasons, including pregnancy, hormonal imbalances, or other underlying health issues.
Given that you had unprotected intercourse during what you believed to be your safe period, it is essential to consider the possibility of pregnancy. If your period does not arrive soon, taking a home pregnancy test could provide clarity. These tests are most accurate when taken after a missed period.
The abdominal bloating and discomfort you are experiencing could be related to various factors, including premenstrual syndrome (PMS), ovulation pain (mittelschmerz), or even gastrointestinal issues. If the discomfort persists or worsens, it would be wise to consult a healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation.
Regarding your lifestyle choices, such as avoiding cold foods and taking cold showers, these are generally not known to have a significant impact on menstrual cycles. However, maintaining a balanced diet, staying hydrated, and managing stress levels can positively influence your menstrual health.
In summary, while some variation in menstrual cycle length is normal, significant changes accompanied by other symptoms warrant further investigation. If your period does not arrive soon, consider taking a pregnancy test and consulting with a healthcare provider to discuss your symptoms and any potential underlying issues. Regular monitoring of your cycle and any associated symptoms will help you and your healthcare provider better understand your menstrual health and address any concerns that may arise.
