Post-Laser Skin Issues: Redness, Peeling, and Breakouts - Dermatology

Post-laser complications?

Hello Dr.
Wu, I would like to ask about my condition.
A month ago, I underwent two sessions of intense pulsed light therapy (approximately one week apart).
However, since one day after washing my face, I have experienced peeling and redness around my nostrils, along with some areas that have bled due to peeling.
I also developed a few small acne lesions.
Additionally, I have two cystic acne bumps near my temples.
Could this be a result of damage from the laser treatment, or could it be seborrheic dermatitis or folliculitis? I would like to know how to improve this condition and if there are any medications I should apply.
Also, can I undergo another laser treatment soon? Thank you!

Mr. Hsu, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/07/25

Dr. Li Yufen reply Dermatology

Hello: When there are skin issues, it is recommended to return for a follow-up appointment to address the skin problem.
After improvement, if you wish to undergo additional laser treatments, we will assess the skin condition at that time.
Thank you!

Post-laser skin issues can be quite distressing, especially when they manifest as redness, peeling, and breakouts. It's important to understand that these symptoms can occur as a normal part of the healing process after laser treatments, but they can also indicate underlying issues that may need to be addressed.

Firstly, the redness and peeling you are experiencing around the nose area could be a result of several factors. After laser treatments, the skin is often more sensitive and can react to various stimuli, including skincare products, environmental factors, and even the cleansing process. The fact that you mentioned the peeling has progressed to the point of bleeding is concerning and suggests that your skin barrier may be compromised. This can happen if the skin is overly dry or if there has been irritation from products used post-treatment.

The appearance of small acne-like bumps, particularly cystic acne near the temples, could indicate a few possibilities. One potential cause is folliculitis, which is an inflammation of the hair follicles that can occur after laser treatments. This condition can be exacerbated by factors such as sweating, occlusive products, or even friction from clothing or towels. Another possibility is seborrheic dermatitis, which can flare up due to changes in skin condition or irritation.

To manage these symptoms, it is crucial to adopt a gentle skincare routine. Here are some recommendations:
1. Moisturization: Use a gentle, hydrating moisturizer that is free from fragrances and irritants. Look for products containing ceramides or hyaluronic acid, which can help restore the skin barrier and retain moisture.

2. Avoid Irritants: Steer clear of harsh exfoliants, retinoids, or any active ingredients that could further irritate your skin. Instead, focus on soothing ingredients like aloe vera or calendula.

3. Topical Treatments: If you suspect folliculitis or cystic acne, a topical antibiotic or benzoyl peroxide may be beneficial. However, it is essential to consult with your dermatologist before starting any new treatment to ensure it is appropriate for your condition.

4. Sun Protection: Post-laser skin is particularly sensitive to UV exposure. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30, and reapply it regularly, especially if you are outdoors. This is crucial to prevent further irritation and pigmentation issues.

5. Consultation with a Dermatologist: Given the severity of your symptoms, including bleeding and the development of cystic acne, it is advisable to consult with your dermatologist. They can assess your skin condition and may recommend treatments such as topical steroids to reduce inflammation or other medications to address acne.

Regarding your question about continuing laser treatments, it is generally recommended to wait until your skin has fully healed before undergoing additional procedures. This allows your skin to recover and reduces the risk of further irritation or complications. Your dermatologist will be able to provide specific guidance based on your skin's current condition.

In summary, while post-laser redness and peeling can be common, the extent of your symptoms suggests that your skin may need extra care and attention. Implementing a gentle skincare routine, avoiding irritants, and consulting with a dermatologist will be key steps in managing your post-laser skin issues effectively.
