Is it safe to use a small nurse liquid (nurse's liquid) while pregnant?
Hello doctor, I have a wound on my finger, so I used a liquid antiseptic called OK Bump.
Its ingredients include benzyl alcohol, camphor, tricresyl phosphate, nitrocellulose, ethyl acetate, and isopropyl myristate.
I only used it once and I'm concerned whether its ingredients could affect the fetus.
Thank you.
Miss Chen, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/07/27
Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello, based on your description, the chances of affecting pregnancy are not very high.
However, since some over-the-counter medications contain multiple components, it is not possible to know all of their contents.
It is still advisable to have your obstetrician monitor you closely.
Thank you! Wishing you a smooth delivery.

When considering the safety of using OK Bong Liquid (小護士液體 OK蹦) during pregnancy, it is essential to evaluate the ingredients and their potential effects on both the mother and the developing fetus. The components you mentioned include benzyl alcohol, camphor, triclosan, nitrocellulose, ethyl acetate, and isopropyl myristate.
1. Benzyl Alcohol: This is commonly used as a preservative and solvent in various pharmaceutical and cosmetic products. While it is generally recognized as safe in low concentrations, excessive exposure can lead to toxicity, particularly in infants. However, a single application is unlikely to pose a significant risk.
2. Camphor: This compound is often used in topical analgesics and has a history of use in traditional medicine. However, camphor can be toxic in high doses, especially if ingested or absorbed in large amounts. Pregnant women are usually advised to avoid products containing camphor due to potential risks, including fetal toxicity.
3. Triclosan: This is an antibacterial agent that has been used in various consumer products. There are concerns regarding its safety, particularly regarding endocrine disruption and antibiotic resistance. While the risk from a single use is low, it is advisable to limit exposure during pregnancy.
4. Nitrocellulose: This is primarily used as a film-forming agent in cosmetics and nail products. It is generally considered safe for topical use, but its effects during pregnancy are not well-studied.
5. Ethyl Acetate: This solvent is commonly used in nail polish removers and other products. It can cause irritation if inhaled or absorbed in significant amounts, but occasional use is typically not harmful.
6. Isopropyl Myristate: This is used as a skin conditioning agent and is generally considered safe for topical use.
Given the ingredients listed, the risk of significant harm from a single application of OK Bong Liquid appears to be low. However, it is crucial to consider that the safety of any substance during pregnancy can vary based on individual circumstances, including the stage of pregnancy, the amount used, and the frequency of use.
It is always best practice for pregnant women to consult with their healthcare provider before using any new products, especially those containing multiple active ingredients. Your healthcare provider can provide personalized advice based on your medical history and the specifics of your pregnancy.
In summary, while a single use of OK Bong Liquid is unlikely to cause harm, it is essential to approach the use of any topical product with caution during pregnancy. Always prioritize consulting with a healthcare professional to ensure the safety of both you and your baby.
