Conflicting Pregnancy Test Results: the Confusion - Obstetrics and Gynecology

Pregnancy test results are inconsistent?

Hello Doctor: I would like to ask about my situation.
My menstrual period last month was from June 16 to June 23.
On July 24, my period did not arrive, and I used brand A pregnancy test, which showed two lines.
That day, I went to the obstetrics and gynecology department for an ultrasound, but the results showed nothing conclusive.
However, the next day, I started my period (from July 25 to today, with bleeding similar to my usual menstruation).
On July 25, I used brand B pregnancy test, and the result showed one line.
Since I was still concerned, on July 28, I purchased brand A pregnancy test again, which still showed two lines.
I also bought brands C and D pregnancy tests, but they all showed one line.
Given this situation, am I pregnant? Additionally, could the differences in results be related to whether I used morning urine or not?

K, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/07/28

Hello, based on your description, there is a possibility of pregnancy.
The accuracy of home pregnancy tests can vary, and bleeding cannot determine whether it is menstruation, pregnancy, or a miscarriage.
It is recommended that you consult a specialist in obstetrics and gynecology for confirmation and examination.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health.

Conflicting pregnancy test results can indeed be confusing and concerning, especially when accompanied by unusual bleeding. Based on your description, it seems you have experienced a series of events that have led to uncertainty regarding your pregnancy status. Let's break down the situation and address your questions.

First, it's important to understand how home pregnancy tests work. These tests detect the presence of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a hormone produced during pregnancy. When you received two lines on the A brand test, it indicated a positive result, suggesting that you might be pregnant. However, the subsequent bleeding you experienced could be interpreted in different ways.

The bleeding you described, which started on July 25, could be a sign of several things. It might be an early pregnancy loss (miscarriage), known as a chemical pregnancy, where a fertilized egg implants but does not develop properly. Alternatively, it could be an irregular menstrual cycle, which can sometimes mimic pregnancy symptoms and lead to positive test results. The fact that you had a positive test followed by a negative one suggests that your body may have experienced a transient increase in hCG, possibly due to a very early pregnancy that did not progress.

Regarding the variation in test results from different brands (A, B, C, and D), it's essential to consider several factors that can influence the accuracy of home pregnancy tests:
1. Sensitivity of the Test: Different brands have different sensitivities to hCG. Some tests can detect lower levels of hCG than others, which may explain why one test shows a positive result while another does not.

2. Timing of the Test: The concentration of hCG in your urine can vary throughout the day. Testing with first-morning urine, which is typically more concentrated, can yield more accurate results. If you tested later in the day, the results might be less reliable.

3. Dilution of Urine: If you have consumed a lot of fluids before testing, your urine may be diluted, potentially leading to a false negative result.

4. User Error: Following the instructions carefully is crucial. Ensure that you are using the test correctly, including the timing of reading the results.

Given that you have experienced conflicting results, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare provider for further evaluation. A blood test for hCG can provide a more definitive answer regarding your pregnancy status, as it can detect lower levels of the hormone than urine tests. Additionally, an ultrasound may be warranted to assess the status of your uterus and any potential pregnancy.

In summary, while the initial positive test suggested pregnancy, the subsequent bleeding and negative tests indicate that further investigation is necessary. It is crucial to follow up with your healthcare provider, who can offer personalized advice and support based on your specific situation. They can help clarify whether you are experiencing a miscarriage, an irregular menstrual cycle, or another issue entirely. Remember, early medical intervention can be vital for your health and peace of mind.
