Glans penis abrasion?
Hello doctor, yesterday while I was doing some DIY, I accidentally seemed to have scraped the skin on my glans.
Now the area is red, and I applied some Neomycin ointment.
This morning it felt less painful, but by the end of the day, there was a bit of yellow discharge.
I would like to ask if continuing to apply the ointment will help it heal, how long the healing process might take, and how I should clean the wound.
Thank you.

Hello, wound healing typically takes about 14 days or more.
If there is frequent irritation, the healing time may be extended.
If you have any further questions, feel free to ask, and we can discuss and research together.

Managing a torn glans, or any injury to the genital area, requires careful attention to hygiene and proper treatment to promote healing and prevent infection. Here are some tips and care instructions based on your situation:
Immediate Care and Treatment
1. Clean the Area: It's crucial to keep the area clean to prevent infection. Use mild soap and warm water to gently clean the affected area. Avoid using harsh soaps or scrubbing the area too vigorously, as this can cause further irritation.
2. Drying: After cleaning, gently pat the area dry with a clean towel. Avoid rubbing, as this can exacerbate the injury.
3. Topical Treatment: You mentioned using a topical antibiotic ointment (like Neosporin). This can be beneficial for preventing infection. However, if you notice any signs of infection (such as increased redness, swelling, warmth, or discharge that is yellow or green), it is essential to consult a healthcare professional.
4. Avoid Irritants: Refrain from using any products that could irritate the area, such as scented soaps, lotions, or powders. Also, avoid tight clothing that may rub against the injury.
5. Monitor Symptoms: Keep an eye on the injury. If the redness persists or worsens, or if you experience increased pain, swelling, or discharge, seek medical attention.
Healing Time
The healing time for a minor tear in the glans can vary depending on the severity of the injury. Generally, superficial injuries may take a few days to a week to heal, while deeper cuts may take longer. If you are following proper care instructions and the injury is minor, you should start to see improvement within a few days. If there is no improvement or if symptoms worsen, consult a healthcare provider.
When to Seek Medical Attention
- Signs of Infection: If you notice increased pain, swelling, redness, warmth, or discharge that is yellow or green, these could be signs of an infection that requires medical treatment.
- Persistent Symptoms: If the injury does not improve within a week or if you have concerns about the healing process, it’s best to consult a healthcare professional.
- Severe Pain or Bleeding: If you experience severe pain or significant bleeding, seek immediate medical attention.
Additional Tips
- Avoid Sexual Activity: Until the area has fully healed, it is advisable to avoid any sexual activity to prevent further irritation or injury.
- Stay Hydrated and Maintain a Healthy Diet: Good nutrition and hydration can support the healing process.
- Follow Up: If you have any concerns or if the injury does not seem to be healing properly, follow up with a healthcare provider for further evaluation and treatment.
In summary, while it sounds like you are taking appropriate initial steps to care for your injury, monitoring for signs of infection and maintaining good hygiene are crucial. If you have any doubts or if the condition worsens, do not hesitate to seek medical advice. Healing can take time, but with proper care, you should see improvement.
