Is it possible to become pregnant?
Hello, doctor.
On the morning of July 31st, the day before my girlfriend's period, we had sexual intercourse and I ejaculated inside her.
The next day, on August 1st, her period started as expected.
Her menstrual cycle has always been regular, occurring at the beginning of each month, and as of today, August 3rd, the flow has been normal.
Can you please advise if this means she is not pregnant? Thank you, doctor.
Tommy, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/08/03
Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello, if it is confirmed that the period on August 1st is normal, then pregnancy is unlikely.
However, vaginal bleeding does not always indicate menstruation.
If the bleeding feels different from your usual period, it is still advisable to check for pregnancy.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health, Dr.
Chang.

More Info
When it comes to understanding the timing of ovulation and the possibility of pregnancy, it's important to recognize the menstrual cycle's phases. The average menstrual cycle lasts about 28 days, but it can vary from person to person. Ovulation typically occurs around the midpoint of the cycle, approximately 14 days before the start of the next period. This means that if your girlfriend has a regular cycle and her period is due on August 1, she likely ovulated around July 17.
Having sexual intercourse the day before her period is generally considered a low-risk time for conception. Sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for up to five days, but since ovulation has already passed, the chances of sperm meeting an egg are significantly reduced. If her period started as expected on August 1, it is a strong indication that she is not pregnant.
However, there are a few nuances to consider. Some women experience irregular cycles or may not ovulate exactly when expected. Stress, illness, or hormonal imbalances can also affect ovulation timing. If your girlfriend's cycle is typically regular and she experienced a normal period, the likelihood of pregnancy is very low.
If there are any concerns about potential pregnancy, such as missed periods or unusual symptoms, it may be wise for her to take a home pregnancy test or consult with a healthcare provider for further evaluation.
In summary, based on the information provided, it is highly unlikely that your girlfriend is pregnant if she had a normal menstrual period following intercourse. However, if there are any doubts or changes in her cycle, seeking medical advice is always a prudent step.
