Expectorating brown substances?
Hello doctor, I would like to ask about something.
The day before yesterday morning, I vomited.
At first, it was clear, very acidic fluid, and then I started to vomit something brownish, which was stringy in texture.
In the morning, I hadn't eaten anything, only had some milk tea.
What could be the reason for this? I looked online and found that brown color could indicate bleeding.

Dr. Chen Qifeng reply Gastroenterology and Hepatology
Hello, if brown vomit occurs, it is necessary to rule out the possibility of upper gastrointestinal bleeding; if it is accompanied by black, tarry stools, the likelihood of bleeding is even higher.
There are many causes of bleeding, with the most common being bleeding from peptic ulcers.
Sincerely, Dr.

Brown vomit can be concerning, and it's important to understand its potential causes and implications for your health. The presence of brown or coffee-ground-like material in vomit typically indicates that there may be blood that has been digested, which can occur when blood from the upper gastrointestinal tract (such as the stomach or esophagus) mixes with stomach acid. This process can lead to a dark, brown appearance, resembling coffee grounds.
There are several potential causes for brown vomit, including:
1. Gastrointestinal Bleeding: As mentioned, if there is bleeding in the upper gastrointestinal tract, the blood can mix with stomach acid, leading to the brown coloration. Conditions that can cause such bleeding include ulcers, gastritis, or esophageal varices.
2. Food and Drink: Sometimes, the consumption of certain foods or beverages can lead to changes in the color of vomit. For instance, if you consumed something dark or rich in color, it might affect the appearance of your vomit.
3. Dehydration or Fasting: If you have not eaten for an extended period, your stomach may produce bile, which can also contribute to the color of vomit. In your case, since you mentioned that you had not eaten and only consumed a milk tea, the combination of an empty stomach and the contents of the drink could have contributed to the brown vomit.
4. Infections: Certain infections, particularly those affecting the gastrointestinal tract, can lead to symptoms such as vomiting, and in some cases, bleeding.
5. Medications: Some medications can irritate the stomach lining or affect the gastrointestinal tract, leading to vomiting that may contain blood.
Given your symptoms, especially the presence of brown vomit after consuming only a milk tea, it is crucial to seek medical attention. A healthcare professional will likely perform a physical examination and may recommend diagnostic tests such as blood tests, an endoscopy, or imaging studies to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms.
In the meantime, it is essential to stay hydrated, especially if you are experiencing vomiting. Drinking clear fluids can help prevent dehydration. Avoid solid foods until you can consult with a healthcare provider, as they may recommend a specific diet based on your condition.
In summary, brown vomit can indicate a serious condition, particularly if it is associated with gastrointestinal bleeding. It is essential to consult a healthcare professional promptly to evaluate your symptoms and receive appropriate care. Remember, early intervention can be crucial in managing potential health issues effectively.
