Expulsion of brown viscous substance?
I would like to ask about experiencing brown, sticky discharge two days after menstruation for the past two months.
This was not the case before.
Could this indicate some changes in my body? Thank you.
yi, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/08/06
Dr. Lin Manying reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
The aforementioned discharge indicates a small amount of bleeding.
If the menstrual period lasts for more than 10 days, or if there has been sexual intercourse without having undergone a Pap smear, it is recommended to visit an outpatient clinic for examination.

More Info
Brown sticky discharge after menstruation can be a common occurrence, but when it persists for an extended period, such as two months in your case, it can raise concerns that warrant further investigation. The brown color of the discharge typically indicates that the blood is older and has taken longer to exit the body, which can happen at the end of a menstrual cycle. However, if this discharge is sticky and continues for several cycles, it may suggest underlying changes in your body or hormonal fluctuations.
There are several potential causes for this type of discharge:
1. Hormonal Imbalances: Fluctuations in hormones, particularly estrogen and progesterone, can lead to changes in menstrual flow and discharge. Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or thyroid disorders can disrupt hormonal balance and may result in unusual discharge patterns.
2. Endometrial Changes: The endometrium, or the lining of the uterus, can undergo changes that might cause brown discharge. Conditions such as endometriosis or uterine fibroids can lead to abnormal bleeding or discharge.
3. Infections: Certain infections, including sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or bacterial vaginosis, can cause changes in vaginal discharge. These infections may also be accompanied by other symptoms such as itching, burning, or an unusual odor.
4. Pregnancy: In some cases, brown discharge can be an early sign of pregnancy, particularly if it occurs around the time of expected menstruation. This could be due to implantation bleeding, where a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining.
5. Cervical or Uterine Polyps: These benign growths can cause irregular bleeding or discharge. They are usually non-cancerous but may require monitoring or removal if they cause symptoms.
6. Menopause Transition: If you are approaching menopause, changes in your menstrual cycle and discharge can occur due to hormonal fluctuations during this transitional phase.
Given that you have experienced this brown sticky discharge for two consecutive months, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare provider. They can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include a pelvic exam, ultrasound, or blood tests to assess hormone levels and rule out any underlying conditions.
In the meantime, it is essential to monitor any additional symptoms you may experience, such as changes in menstrual cycle regularity, pain, or any unusual odors associated with the discharge. Keeping a record of your menstrual cycle and any symptoms can provide valuable information to your healthcare provider.
In summary, while brown sticky discharge after menstruation can be normal, persistent changes should not be overlooked. Seeking medical advice will help ensure that any potential issues are addressed promptly and appropriately. Your health is important, and understanding these changes can lead to better management and peace of mind.
