Missed menstruation accompanied by persistent diarrhea?

Why hasn't my period come (it's been over 9 days), and I've been experiencing diarrhea along with other premenstrual symptoms? What could be the cause?

Niming, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/08/06

1.
If your period is late and you have had sexual intercourse recently, please confirm whether you are pregnant by using a home pregnancy test.

2.
If your period is late and you are not pregnant, it may be due to hormonal imbalance.
Possible causes include insomnia, high stress levels, medication (such as traditional Chinese medicine or supplements), and changes in weight, among others.

3.
There are many causes of diarrhea, most of which are related to gastrointestinal issues; you should consult a gastroenterologist for treatment.

4.
If your period is late and you are experiencing diarrhea, it may simply be a coincidence of two symptoms occurring together.
However, if they are caused by the same underlying issue, it could be related to hormonal problems, and it is advisable to consult an endocrinologist for evaluation.

Sincerely, Dr.

Missed periods and ongoing diarrhea can be concerning symptoms that may indicate various underlying issues. It is essential to consider multiple factors that could contribute to these symptoms, including hormonal imbalances, stress, dietary changes, or even potential medical conditions.

Firstly, a missed period, known medically as amenorrhea, can occur for several reasons. The most common cause is pregnancy, especially if you are sexually active. If there is a possibility of pregnancy, taking a home pregnancy test can provide clarity. If the test is negative, other factors may be at play.

Hormonal imbalances are another significant cause of missed periods. Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, or issues with the pituitary gland can disrupt the normal menstrual cycle. Stress and lifestyle changes, including significant weight loss or gain, excessive exercise, or changes in diet, can also affect hormone levels and lead to missed periods.

Regarding the ongoing diarrhea, this symptom can be related to various gastrointestinal issues, including infections (viral, bacterial, or parasitic), food intolerances, or inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis. Stress can also exacerbate gastrointestinal symptoms, leading to diarrhea.

In some cases, the two symptoms may be connected. For instance, hormonal changes can affect the gastrointestinal tract, leading to symptoms like diarrhea. Additionally, if you are experiencing significant stress or anxiety, it could contribute to both missed periods and gastrointestinal disturbances.

Given that you have mentioned experiencing other premenstrual symptoms, it is possible that your body is undergoing hormonal fluctuations that could explain both the missed period and the diarrhea. However, it is crucial to monitor your symptoms closely. If the diarrhea persists for more than a couple of days, or if you experience severe abdominal pain, fever, or dehydration, it is essential to seek medical attention.

In summary, the combination of a missed period and ongoing diarrhea can stem from various causes, including pregnancy, hormonal imbalances, stress, or gastrointestinal issues. It is advisable to consult a healthcare professional who can perform a thorough evaluation, including a physical examination, blood tests, and possibly imaging studies, to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms. They can provide appropriate treatment options based on the diagnosis, whether it involves managing hormonal imbalances, addressing gastrointestinal issues, or providing support for stress management. Remember, early intervention can often lead to better outcomes, so do not hesitate to seek medical advice.
