Wisdom tooth issues
Hello doctor, I have been experiencing a sharp pain in my lower left tooth when drinking water or eating.
I visited the dentist, but they couldn't determine the cause.
They mentioned it might be due to an emerging wisdom tooth.
However, isn't it true that the pain occurs after having the wisdom tooth extracted? Is it common to feel pain when drinking water while a wisdom tooth is coming in?

Dear online user, based on your description, it is advisable to have a dentist take an X-ray to examine the growth position and direction of your wisdom teeth.
This will help check for any cavities, tooth wear, or other conditions affecting the neighboring teeth that may be causing discomfort or pain when drinking.
Thank you for your inquiry.

Understanding wisdom tooth pain can be quite complex, as it often involves various factors related to dental health and the positioning of the teeth. In your case, experiencing pain in the left lower teeth while eating or drinking could indeed be linked to the emergence of wisdom teeth, but it may also be indicative of other dental issues.
Firstly, wisdom teeth, or third molars, typically emerge in late adolescence or early adulthood. Their growth can sometimes lead to discomfort or pain, especially if they are impacted, meaning they do not have enough space to emerge properly. This can cause pressure on adjacent teeth, leading to pain that may not be localized solely to the wisdom tooth area. In your situation, if the pain is occurring while drinking or eating, it could suggest that the wisdom tooth is exerting pressure on neighboring teeth or that there is inflammation in the surrounding gum tissue.
Moreover, if the wisdom tooth is partially erupted, it can create a pocket where food particles and bacteria can accumulate, leading to infection or pericoronitis, which is inflammation of the gum tissue surrounding the tooth. This condition can cause significant discomfort and may result in pain when consuming hot or cold beverages, as the temperature can aggravate the inflamed tissue.
Another possibility is that the pain you are experiencing is not directly related to the wisdom tooth itself but rather to the adjacent teeth. For instance, if you have had previous dental work done on the nearby teeth, such as fillings or crowns, there could be complications from those procedures. Deep fillings can sometimes get close to the nerve of the tooth, leading to sensitivity and pain when exposed to temperature changes.
In terms of pain management, over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can be effective in alleviating discomfort. However, it is essential to follow the recommended dosages and consult with a healthcare professional if the pain persists or worsens. Additionally, applying a cold compress to the outside of your cheek can help reduce swelling and numb the area, providing temporary relief.
If the pain continues despite these measures, it is crucial to revisit your dentist for a thorough examination. They may recommend imaging studies, such as X-rays, to assess the position of the wisdom teeth and check for any underlying issues with the adjacent teeth. If the wisdom teeth are indeed impacted or if there is evidence of infection, your dentist may suggest extraction or other treatments to address the problem.
In summary, while the emergence of wisdom teeth can certainly be a source of discomfort, it is vital to consider other potential causes of pain in the surrounding teeth. A comprehensive evaluation by your dentist will help determine the exact cause of your symptoms and guide you toward the most appropriate treatment options. If you have any further concerns or if the pain intensifies, do not hesitate to seek professional dental advice.
