Urine with a sulfurous odor?

Hello doctor, as the title suggests, my urine has a sulfur smell.
This doesn't happen very often, and I haven't eaten asparagus.
I suspect it might be related to vaginal inflammation or urethritis.
Right after urinating, I feel the urge to go again, but the amount is small, just a few drops.
There is no pain while urinating, but I do feel an itchy sensation after I finish.
I have a history of being hospitalized for kidney inflammation; could this be related? Since July 29 until now, I've only had a few instances of urine with a sulfur smell.
Besides inflammation, are there other possibilities? (I haven't gotten my period, and my first pregnancy test came back positive.) Thank you.

Doctors typically cannot make a diagnosis based solely on the smell of urine.
If there are concerns, it is advisable to visit a nearby medical facility for a general urine test to check for signs of infection, proteinuria, glycosuria, or other abnormalities.
Urine is a waste product of the body's metabolism and is related to diet and lifestyle.
If one frequently consumes greasy, salty, spicy, or acidic foods and does not drink enough water, the levels of urea nitrogen and other waste products in the urine may increase, resulting in a stronger odor.
It is recommended that if there are any bodily abnormalities, one should consult a physician in person.
The doctor can provide a more accurate diagnosis based on a detailed medical history, physical examination, and specific inquiries.
It is important to note that a simple description cannot determine the condition; a thorough consultation and medical history are necessary.
It is still advisable to seek evaluation and treatment from a qualified physician.
Doctors often need to conduct a medical history inquiry, visual inspection, palpation, and tests to confirm the diagnosis and treatment plan.
If there are health issues, it is recommended to seek examination and treatment from a urologist nearby.

The presence of sulfur-scented urine can be concerning and may indicate various underlying issues. While it is not a common occurrence, it can arise from several factors, including dietary choices, infections, or metabolic conditions. In your case, since you mentioned that you have not consumed asparagus, which is a well-known cause of sulfurous urine, we should consider other potential causes.

1. Infections: One of the most common reasons for changes in urine odor, including a sulfur-like smell, is a urinary tract infection (UTI) or a vaginal infection. Symptoms such as increased urgency to urinate, a burning sensation, or itching after urination can indicate an infection. Given your history of kidney inflammation, it is essential to rule out any recurrent infections that could be affecting your urinary system.

2. Dehydration: Insufficient fluid intake can concentrate urine, leading to stronger odors. If you are not drinking enough water, your urine may have a more pungent smell. Ensuring adequate hydration can help dilute your urine and may alleviate the odor.

3. Dietary Factors: Although you mentioned not eating asparagus, other foods or supplements can also influence urine odor. For example, certain vitamins, particularly B vitamins, can impart a strong smell. If you have recently changed your diet or started any new supplements, this could be a contributing factor.

4. Metabolic Conditions: Certain metabolic disorders can lead to unusual urine odors. For instance, conditions like diabetes can cause sweet-smelling urine, while other metabolic issues might lead to sulfurous odors. If you have any underlying health conditions, it would be prudent to discuss these with your healthcare provider.

5. Pregnancy: You mentioned a positive pregnancy test. Hormonal changes during pregnancy can affect your body in various ways, including changes in urine odor. Additionally, pregnancy can increase the risk of urinary tract infections, which could explain the symptoms you are experiencing.

Given your symptoms of increased urgency to urinate, the sulfur smell, and the itching sensation, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. They may recommend a urinalysis to check for signs of infection or other abnormalities. If an infection is confirmed, appropriate antibiotics can be prescribed to address the issue.

In summary, while sulfur-scented urine can be benign in some cases, it is essential to consider the context of your symptoms and medical history. Since you have experienced kidney inflammation in the past, it is crucial to be vigilant about any changes in your urinary health. Prompt medical attention can help identify the cause and ensure appropriate treatment, especially if there is a risk of infection or other complications.
