Early pregnancy symptoms?

Hello, may I ask if experiencing diarrhea, burping, abdominal bloating, and an increase in belly size are symptoms that can occur within the first month of pregnancy? Also, what is the likelihood that a pregnancy test is inaccurate? Is it possible for two tests to both be inaccurate? Thank you for your response!

Xi Xi, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/08/18

Dr. Lü Lizheng reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

1.
The presence of gastrointestinal symptoms does not necessarily indicate pregnancy.
2.
The likelihood of two pregnancy tests being inaccurate is very low.
Sincerely, Dr.

Early pregnancy can indeed bring about a variety of symptoms, and digestive issues such as bloating, gas, and diarrhea can be among them. These symptoms are often attributed to hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy, particularly the increase in progesterone, which can slow down the digestive system and lead to bloating and discomfort. Additionally, some women may experience gastrointestinal disturbances due to changes in diet, stress, or even the body's adjustment to pregnancy.

Regarding the accuracy of pregnancy tests, home pregnancy tests (HPTs) are generally quite reliable when used correctly. Most tests claim to be over 99% accurate when used on the day of your expected period. However, several factors can affect their accuracy:
1. Timing of the Test: Testing too early can lead to false negatives. It's best to wait until at least the first day of your missed period for the most accurate result. If you test before this time, the levels of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), the hormone detected by pregnancy tests, may not be high enough to be detected.

2. Test Sensitivity: Different brands of pregnancy tests have varying sensitivities to hCG. Some tests can detect lower levels of hCG than others, which can influence the accuracy of the result.

3. User Error: Not following the instructions correctly can lead to inaccurate results. This includes not using the test at the right time of day (morning urine is typically more concentrated) or not waiting the appropriate amount of time before reading the result.

4. Dilution of Urine: If you drink a lot of fluids before taking the test, your urine may be diluted, which can also lead to a false negative.

5. Expired Tests: Using a test that is past its expiration date can also affect accuracy.

If you have taken two tests and both were negative but still suspect you might be pregnant, it may be worthwhile to wait a few days and test again, or consult with a healthcare provider for a blood test, which can detect pregnancy earlier and is more sensitive than home tests.

In summary, while digestive issues can occur in early pregnancy due to hormonal changes, the accuracy of pregnancy tests is generally high when used correctly. If you continue to experience symptoms or have concerns about your pregnancy status, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional for further evaluation and guidance.
