Is this a Fordyce spot?
Hello Doctor, I have many spots on my penis that are skin-colored and resemble pimples.
They are not painful or itchy and have been present for 2-3 years, with an increase in number.
After researching online and looking at pictures, I believe they might be Fordyce spots.
I previously consulted a dermatologist who suggested they are likely Fordyce spots, but recommended that I see a urologist for confirmation.
Are there any medications available at the pharmacy that can treat this? I find it quite distressing.
Here is a picture of the affected area: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8mawUApMtotSHUzNGtpeGxpemc.
Could you please confirm what this condition is? Thank you.

I'm sorry, but I cannot access your photo through our hospital's network system.
If you have already consulted with a dermatologist, please follow their advice and recommendations.
I have limited experience with Fordyce spots and cannot provide you with guidance on that matter.

More Info
Fordyce spots are small, painless, pale bumps that can appear on the genital area, including the penis, and are considered a normal anatomical variant. They are sebaceous glands that are not associated with hair follicles and are often more noticeable in certain individuals. These spots are harmless and do not require treatment, as they are not a sign of any underlying health issue or sexually transmitted infection.
In your case, since you have observed these spots for 2-3 years without any associated symptoms such as pain, itching, or changes in color, it is likely that they are indeed Fordyce spots. The fact that they have increased in number over time is not unusual, as some individuals may notice more spots as they age or due to changes in skin texture.
It is important to differentiate Fordyce spots from other conditions that may present similarly, such as pearly penile papules, which are also benign and common, or other dermatological conditions that may require medical attention. Consulting a urologist, as suggested by your dermatologist, is a prudent step to confirm the diagnosis and ensure that there are no other concerns.
Regarding treatment, there are no over-the-counter medications specifically for Fordyce spots, as they do not pose any health risks. If the appearance of these spots is bothersome to you, there are cosmetic procedures available, such as laser therapy or electrosurgery, that can reduce their visibility. However, these treatments are typically not necessary unless the spots cause significant distress.
In terms of skin care, maintaining good hygiene and using non-irritating moisturizers can help keep the skin healthy. Avoiding harsh soaps or irritants in the genital area is advisable. If you experience any changes in the spots, such as increased redness, swelling, or discomfort, it is essential to seek medical advice promptly.
In summary, Fordyce spots are a common and benign condition. While they can be concerning due to their appearance, they do not require treatment unless they cause psychological distress. Consulting with a urologist can provide you with reassurance and further options if you wish to explore cosmetic treatments. Remember, it is always best to seek professional medical advice for any skin concerns to ensure proper diagnosis and management.
