Bleeding during the use of contraceptive pills?
Hello Doctor,
This is my first time taking birth control pills (brand: Mesitron), which come in a pack of 21.
I started taking the first pill on the fifth day of my last menstrual period (August 2) and finished the entire pack yesterday (August 21).
I have been experiencing some bleeding for a while now, starting around August 11, which is brown in color and has been staining the bottom of my underwear.
I would like to ask if this is a common occurrence due to taking birth control pills for the first time.
Additionally, if I had unprotected intercourse on the 7th and 12th days of taking the pills, what is the likelihood of pregnancy? Thank you!

1.
Based on your description, it seems more like a mild case of irregular menstruation.
Typically, continuing to take the contraceptive pills for the next cycle will help improve this.
2.
As long as you take the contraceptive pills regularly, there is a 99% effectiveness in preventing pregnancy, even if there is some bleeding, it remains effective.
Sincerely, Dr.

Understanding breakthrough bleeding while taking birth control pills can be a common concern for many women, especially those who are new to hormonal contraceptives. Breakthrough bleeding refers to unexpected bleeding that occurs between menstrual periods while on birth control, and it can be particularly prevalent during the first few months of starting a new contraceptive regimen.
When you begin taking birth control pills, your body undergoes hormonal adjustments as it adapts to the new levels of estrogen and progestin. This adjustment period can lead to irregular bleeding or spotting, which is often described as breakthrough bleeding. In your case, since you started taking the pill on the fifth day of your last menstrual cycle, it is not unusual to experience some light bleeding or spotting, especially if your body is still acclimating to the hormones. The brown color of the discharge you mentioned typically indicates older blood, which is common during this type of bleeding.
Regarding your question about the risk of pregnancy, it is important to understand how birth control pills work. Most combination birth control pills, like the one you mentioned (美適儂), require a full week of consistent use before they become fully effective in preventing pregnancy. Since you started taking the pills on the fifth day of your menstrual cycle, you would need to use additional contraception (like condoms) for the first seven days of taking the pill to ensure maximum protection against pregnancy. If you had unprotected intercourse during the first week of taking the pill, there is a possibility of pregnancy, although the risk is generally lower if you started the pill correctly.
If you continue to experience breakthrough bleeding beyond the first few months, or if the bleeding is heavy or accompanied by other concerning symptoms (such as severe pain), it would be advisable to consult with your healthcare provider. They may want to evaluate whether the specific formulation of the pill is suitable for you or if an alternative method of contraception might be more appropriate.
In summary, breakthrough bleeding can be a normal side effect when starting birth control pills, particularly for the first few months. It is essential to use additional contraception during the initial week of taking the pill to minimize the risk of unintended pregnancy. If you have ongoing concerns or unusual symptoms, seeking advice from a healthcare professional is always a good step to ensure your reproductive health is well managed.
