Regarding pregnancy?
Hello, doctor.
My girlfriend got her period on July 4th.
We had a brief sexual encounter on July 20th where I inserted my penis for less than 3 seconds and then pulled out without ejaculating.
I'm quite certain about this.
Could this lead to pregnancy? I took a pregnancy test on August 4th, which showed negative (but I didn't use morning urine and didn't hold it for 4 hours, just about 3 hours).
I tested again on August 10th, and it also showed negative (again, not using morning urine and holding it for 3 hours and 50 minutes).
My girlfriend got her period on August 15th, and she said the flow was normal.
The color on the first day was dark red, and for the next few days, it was bright red, lasting about 6 to 7 days without any clots.
However, I'm still worried about the possibility of pregnancy, as I've read online about cases where women had their periods for three months before discovering they were pregnant.
Additionally, she has been experiencing lower back pain and an increased appetite (she has gained weight) — she has also been doing more household chores and exercising more than before.
Should I still be concerned? I'm really anxious and hope to get an answer.
Also, is an increased appetite really a sign of pregnancy? My girlfriend usually eats very little, but recently she mentioned that she can eat a full portion now (which she couldn't before).
Thank you for your help, doctor.

Hello, based on your description, if your menstrual period is normal from the 8th to the 15th, the chances of pregnancy are low.
The instances you mentioned where someone has a period but is still pregnant are often due to early pregnancy bleeding being mistaken for menstruation.
It is not possible to determine pregnancy solely based on subjective symptoms.
If you are uncertain whether your bleeding is a true menstrual period or if you are concerned that your symptoms may indicate pregnancy, it is advisable to consult a physician for examinations such as ultrasound, urine tests, or blood tests to confirm whether or not you are pregnant.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health.

More Info
When it comes to understanding pregnancy concerns, particularly regarding signs, symptoms, and testing, it's essential to approach the situation with a clear understanding of how conception occurs and the reliability of pregnancy tests.
From your description, it seems that you and your girlfriend had a brief encounter on July 20, which was not accompanied by ejaculation. This significantly reduces the likelihood of pregnancy, as sperm needs to be deposited in the vagina for conception to occur. However, it's important to note that pre-ejaculate fluid can contain sperm, albeit in much smaller quantities. Given that you are confident there was no ejaculation, the chances of pregnancy are low, but not entirely zero.
You mentioned that your girlfriend's menstrual cycle began on August 15, which is a good sign that she is likely not pregnant. A normal menstrual period typically indicates that the body is functioning as expected and that ovulation did not occur during that cycle. The color and flow of her menstrual blood, described as dark red initially and then bright red, are also consistent with a typical menstrual cycle. The absence of blood clots further supports this.
Regarding the pregnancy tests taken on August 4 and August 10, the results were negative. While it's true that testing with first-morning urine is generally more reliable due to higher concentrations of hCG (the hormone detected in pregnancy tests), the negative results, combined with the onset of her period, suggest that she is not pregnant. If she had been pregnant, it is likely that the tests would have shown a positive result by the time of her expected period.
Your concerns about symptoms such as lower back pain and increased appetite are understandable. Many women experience various symptoms during their menstrual cycle, including premenstrual syndrome (PMS), which can cause fatigue, mood changes, and physical discomfort. Increased appetite can also be attributed to lifestyle changes, such as increased physical activity or changes in diet, rather than pregnancy.
In terms of your anxiety about the possibility of pregnancy despite the negative tests and the onset of menstruation, it's important to remember that stress and worry can sometimes amplify concerns unnecessarily. If your girlfriend's period is regular and her symptoms align with her menstrual cycle, it is unlikely that she is pregnant.
If there are still lingering doubts or if her symptoms persist in a way that seems unusual, it might be beneficial for her to consult a healthcare provider. They can offer more personalized insights and, if necessary, conduct further testing to provide peace of mind.
In summary, based on the information provided, it seems unlikely that your girlfriend is pregnant. The negative pregnancy tests, combined with the arrival of her menstrual period, suggest that her body is functioning normally. However, if either of you has ongoing concerns, seeking advice from a healthcare professional is always a good step to ensure both of you feel secure and informed about your reproductive health.
