Cloudy vision?

My sclera appears grayish, and there are yellowish areas underneath.
Is this a sign of any disease? Also, yesterday while writing an essay, I noticed that when I looked at a grid with one eye, part of it was obscured by a shadow, and the lines appeared distorted! Is it possible for problems to arise so quickly after having a fundus examination just last month? Thank you.

Dr. Gao Pilin reply Ophthalmology

Hello, anxious senior high school student: The sclera looks fine, and there doesn't seem to be any issues.
However, if the lines appear distorted, you should promptly visit an ophthalmologist to check for any problems with the retina.
Do not delay seeking medical attention.
The ophthalmology department at Puzi Hospital in Taiwan is open Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM and Wednesday afternoons from 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM.
I hope to have the opportunity to assist you.

Cloudy eyes can be a concerning symptom, and your description suggests a few potential issues that may warrant further investigation. The grayish appearance of the sclera (the white part of your eye) and the yellowish tint could indicate several conditions, including but not limited to jaundice, which is often related to liver dysfunction, or other systemic issues. It's essential to consider the overall health of your liver and other organs, as changes in the color of the sclera can reflect underlying health problems.

The black shadow or distortion you experienced while looking through one eye could be indicative of a few different ocular issues. This phenomenon may be related to a condition known as a retinal detachment or a vitreous detachment. In these cases, the vitreous gel that fills the eye can pull away from the retina, leading to visual disturbances such as shadows, flashes of light, or even a sudden increase in floaters. These symptoms can develop relatively quickly, even within a month, especially if there is a change in the vitreous gel or if there has been trauma to the eye.

Given that you had a recent eye examination, it is possible that the changes you are experiencing were not present at the time of your last check-up. Eye conditions can evolve rapidly, and new symptoms can emerge due to various factors, including stress, eye strain, or even changes in your overall health.

Here are some important considerations regarding your symptoms:
1. Seek Immediate Medical Attention: If you experience sudden changes in vision, such as the appearance of shadows, distortions, or flashes of light, it is crucial to seek immediate medical attention. These symptoms could indicate serious conditions like retinal detachment, which requires prompt treatment to prevent permanent vision loss.

2. Regular Eye Exams: Regular eye examinations are vital, especially if you have a history of eye problems or if you notice any changes in your vision. Even if you recently had an eye exam, it is important to communicate any new symptoms to your eye care provider.

3. Monitor Other Symptoms: Pay attention to any other symptoms you may experience, such as yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), changes in appetite, fatigue, or any systemic symptoms that could indicate a broader health issue. These could provide important clues to your healthcare provider.

4. Lifestyle Factors: Consider your lifestyle and any potential factors that could contribute to your symptoms. For example, prolonged screen time without breaks can lead to eye strain, which may exacerbate visual disturbances. Ensure you are practicing good eye hygiene, including taking regular breaks and maintaining proper lighting while reading or writing.

5. Consult a Specialist: If your symptoms persist or worsen, consider consulting an ophthalmologist or a retina specialist. They can perform a comprehensive examination, including imaging tests if necessary, to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms.

In summary, while cloudy eyes and visual distortions can arise from various causes, it is essential to take these symptoms seriously and seek professional evaluation. Early diagnosis and treatment can significantly improve outcomes and help preserve your vision.
