I would like to inquire about a lump on the left side of the neck?
I would like to ask Dr.
Zheng about my condition.
Last year during the Lunar New Year, my neck had swollen once, and I experienced high fevers every night along with neck pain.
I later went to a large hospital, was admitted to the emergency room, and received IV fluids and medication.
Eventually, I recovered, but recently my neck has started to swell again.
This time, it feels a bit hard, but I do not have a fever and the pain is not severe.
I would like to know what this could possibly be.
I have seen a doctor, but I am still a bit worried because I often stay up late doing assignments and sometimes hardly sleep at all.
Could this be related? Thank you.

Hello: Common causes may include lymphadenitis or muscle inflammation.
If you have already sought medical attention, you can take medication for treatment and continue to observe your condition.
It is recommended to maintain a regular schedule and avoid staying up late.
Wishing you peace and good health.
Sincerely, Dr.
Cheng Jue-Yi, Director of the Department of Otolaryngology, Taoyuan Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

Understanding left neck swelling can be a complex issue, as it may arise from various underlying conditions. Given your history of previous neck swelling accompanied by fever and pain, it is essential to consider both infectious and non-infectious causes.
Infections are a common cause of neck swelling, particularly lymphadenopathy, which refers to swollen lymph nodes. This can occur due to viral or bacterial infections, such as a cold, flu, or even more serious conditions like mononucleosis or strep throat. The fact that you experienced fever during your previous episode suggests that an infection was likely involved. However, the absence of fever this time could indicate a different underlying issue.
Another possibility is that the swelling could be due to a benign condition, such as a cyst or lipoma (a fatty tumor). These are generally painless and can feel firm to the touch. However, if the swelling is hard and persistent, it may warrant further investigation to rule out more serious conditions, such as a tumor or lymphadenopathy related to malignancy.
Chronic stress and lack of sleep, which you mentioned due to late-night study sessions, can also contribute to various health issues, including inflammation and immune system dysfunction. Sleep deprivation can weaken your immune response, making you more susceptible to infections and potentially exacerbating any underlying conditions.
Given your symptoms, it is crucial to monitor the swelling closely. If it persists, increases in size, or if you develop new symptoms such as fever, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, or difficulty swallowing, you should seek medical attention promptly. A healthcare professional may recommend imaging studies, such as an ultrasound or CT scan, to evaluate the swelling further and determine its cause.
In summary, while your left neck swelling could be related to previous infections or benign conditions, it is essential to consider your overall health, lifestyle factors, and any new symptoms that may arise. Maintaining a healthy sleep schedule, managing stress, and seeking medical advice when necessary can help address your concerns effectively. If the swelling continues or worsens, do not hesitate to consult a healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation and appropriate management.
