Abnormal discharge after menstruation?
Hello Dr.
Lin: I would like to ask about experiencing brown discharge between my menstrual periods, which lasts for about a week before returning to normal.
Additionally, I have no other symptoms.
I have researched that cervical cancer can present with this symptom, but I have not engaged in sexual intercourse.
Is it still possible for me to develop cervical cancer?
Niming, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/09/05
Dr. Lin Manying reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
It could be ovulation bleeding.
If there are no symptoms of itching or foul odor, and your menstrual cycle is regular, there is no need to worry.
Alternatively, you may visit an outpatient clinic for a gynecological ultrasound to clarify if there are any other abnormalities.

Brown discharge between periods can be a common occurrence and is often not a cause for concern. However, it can be helpful to understand the potential causes and when to seek medical advice.
The brown discharge you are experiencing is typically old blood that has taken longer to exit the body, which is why it appears brown rather than bright red. This can happen for several reasons, including hormonal fluctuations, ovulation, or the beginning or end of your menstrual cycle. It is not uncommon for women to notice brown discharge a few days before their period starts or just after it ends.
In some cases, brown discharge can be associated with ovulation, which occurs roughly in the middle of your menstrual cycle. Some women may experience light spotting during ovulation, which can appear brown. Additionally, if you have recently changed your birth control method or are experiencing stress, these factors can also lead to hormonal changes that may cause brown discharge.
While you mentioned concerns about cervical cancer, it is important to note that cervical cancer typically presents with other symptoms, such as unusual bleeding (e.g., after intercourse or between periods), pelvic pain, or unusual discharge that may have a foul odor. The absence of these symptoms, especially given that you have not engaged in sexual intercourse, significantly reduces the likelihood of cervical cancer being the cause of your brown discharge.
However, it is essential to be aware that other conditions can cause brown discharge, including:
1. Hormonal Imbalances: Fluctuations in hormones can lead to irregular bleeding or spotting.
2. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS): This condition can cause irregular periods and spotting.
3. Endometriosis: This condition can lead to abnormal bleeding and pain.
4. Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID): An infection of the reproductive organs can cause abnormal discharge and other symptoms.
5. Fibroids or Polyps: Non-cancerous growths in the uterus can lead to irregular bleeding.
Given your situation, if the brown discharge continues or if you develop any additional symptoms such as pain, unusual odor, or changes in your menstrual cycle, it would be advisable to consult a healthcare provider. They can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include a pelvic exam, Pap smear, or ultrasound, to rule out any underlying conditions.
In summary, while brown discharge between periods can be normal, it is essential to monitor your symptoms and consult a healthcare professional if you have any concerns. Regular gynecological check-ups are also important for maintaining reproductive health and addressing any potential issues early on.
