The color of semen?

Hello doctor, I would like to ask a question.
I have a habit of DIY, and I do it almost every day.
Recently, I noticed that one or two days after ejaculation, I use a container to catch the semen to avoid a mess, as cleaning up can be troublesome.
However, sometimes I forget to dispose of the container, and I found that the semen inside has turned into a greenish liquid with a foul odor.
Is this normal? I don't recall this happening before; it seems to have started recently, or perhaps I just didn't notice it before.
I also read online that this could be a sign of a bacterial infection, which worries me.
I happened to find this website, so I wanted to ask for your advice to clear my doubts.
Thank you!

Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology

Ancient wisdom suggests that if you place semen in a container, the bacteria within will proliferate, leading to changes.
Note: You can also apply the same method to urine; after a few days, observe whether the urine develops an odor.
Saliva can also be examined in a similar manner.
If there are any unclear points, feel free to ask again for further discussion and research.
Responses found online should only be used as a reference; it is essential to seek medical attention at healthcare facilities when necessary.

When it comes to changes in semen color, particularly if you notice a shift to a greenish hue accompanied by an unpleasant odor, it is essential to take these changes seriously. While some variations in semen color can be benign and related to diet, hydration, or other non-threatening factors, a sudden and persistent change, especially one that includes a foul smell, can indicate an underlying health issue that warrants medical attention.

The greenish color of semen can often be attributed to the presence of pus or an infection in the reproductive system. This could be due to conditions such as prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate gland), sexually transmitted infections (STIs) like gonorrhea or chlamydia, or other bacterial infections. The foul odor you describe is particularly concerning, as it may suggest the presence of bacteria or other pathogens that could be affecting your reproductive health.

Here are some key points to consider regarding changes in semen color and when to seek medical advice:
1. Duration and Consistency: If the greenish color and odor persist over several days or weeks, it is crucial to consult a healthcare professional. Occasional changes might not be alarming, but consistent changes are worth investigating.

2. Associated Symptoms: Pay attention to any other symptoms that may accompany the change in semen color. Symptoms such as pain during ejaculation, discomfort in the pelvic area, fever, or unusual discharge from the penis should prompt immediate medical evaluation.

3. Hygiene and Storage: While your practice of using a container to collect semen is understandable, ensure that the container is clean and that you are practicing good hygiene. Bacteria can proliferate in improperly cleaned containers, potentially leading to contamination.

4. Sexual Health: If you are sexually active, consider whether you have had unprotected sex or if you have multiple partners. STIs can often present with changes in semen color and odor. Getting tested for STIs is a responsible step if you have concerns about your sexual health.

5. Consulting a Healthcare Provider: If you notice these changes, it is advisable to schedule an appointment with a urologist or a healthcare provider specializing in male reproductive health. They may conduct a physical examination, take a detailed medical history, and possibly order tests such as a urinalysis or semen analysis to determine the cause of the changes.

6. Preventive Measures: Maintaining good hygiene, practicing safe sex, and having regular health check-ups can help prevent infections and other health issues that may affect semen quality and color.

In summary, while occasional changes in semen color can occur for various benign reasons, a persistent greenish color accompanied by a foul odor is a sign that you should seek medical advice. Early intervention can help address any potential infections or health concerns before they escalate into more serious issues. Remember, your reproductive health is important, and being proactive about any changes is the best approach.
