There is a painful lump on each side of the ear?
Hello doctor, I recently discovered a hard lump in my right ear that does not move but is painful.
After a few days of having it checked by a doctor, I developed a similar hard lump in my left ear that also does not move and is painful.
Additionally, I experience pain when I turn my head or move my head.
My mother measured the lumps, and they are approximately 2 cm on the left ear and 2.5 cm on the right ear.
What could this be?

Hi Jess: Hello, the most common issue might be parotitis.
It is recommended to drink plenty of water, but if there is a fever or if the swelling continues to increase, it is advisable to seek medical attention for further examination and treatment.
Wishing you safety and health.

More Info
Painful lumps in the ear can be concerning and may arise from various underlying conditions. Based on your description, it seems you have developed hard, painful lumps in both ears that are not movable and cause pain, especially when you turn your head. Here are some potential causes and considerations for your symptoms:
1. Lymphadenopathy: The lumps you are feeling could be swollen lymph nodes. The lymphatic system plays a crucial role in your immune response, and lymph nodes can become enlarged due to infections, inflammation, or other medical conditions. If you have had a recent infection, such as a cold or throat infection, this could explain the swollen lymph nodes.
2. Ear Infections: Both external ear infections (otitis externa) and middle ear infections (otitis media) can lead to pain and swelling. While you mentioned that the lumps are hard and not movable, it's still possible that an underlying infection could be contributing to your symptoms.
3. Cysts or Abscesses: Sebaceous cysts or other types of cysts can form in the ear area and may become painful if they become inflamed or infected. An abscess, which is a collection of pus, can also form in response to infection and may present as a painful lump.
4. Tumors: Although less common, benign tumors such as lipomas or more serious conditions like malignant tumors can present as lumps in the ear area. Given that you have pain associated with these lumps, it is essential to have them evaluated by a healthcare professional.
5. Trauma or Injury: If you have recently experienced any trauma to the ear or head, this could lead to localized swelling and pain.
Given the persistence of your symptoms and the fact that the lumps are painful, it is crucial to seek further evaluation from an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialist. They can perform a thorough examination, which may include imaging studies like an ultrasound or CT scan, to determine the exact nature of the lumps and the appropriate treatment.
Recommendations for Further Action:
- Consult an ENT Specialist: Since you have already seen a doctor, it would be beneficial to follow up with an ENT specialist who can provide a more detailed examination and possibly perform additional tests.
- Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any changes in the lumps, such as size, shape, or associated symptoms like fever, drainage, or increased pain. This information will be helpful for your healthcare provider.
- Avoid Manipulating the Lumps: Refrain from squeezing or trying to drain the lumps, as this can lead to further irritation or infection.
- Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain relief medications, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, can help manage discomfort until you receive a definitive diagnosis.
In conclusion, while there are several potential causes for the painful lumps in your ears, a thorough evaluation by an ENT specialist is essential to determine the underlying issue and appropriate treatment. Early diagnosis and intervention can lead to better outcomes, especially if an infection or other treatable condition is present.
