Influenza type A and right lower abdominal pain with right-sided genital symptoms?
Hello doctor, on the first day I felt slightly weak in the morning and had soreness in my lower limbs.
In the afternoon, I experienced extreme discomfort and fever.
On the second day, after being diagnosed with influenza A, my daily routine returned to normal with no discomfort except for fever and cough.
However, on the third day, after getting up, my condition slightly worsened, and I began to feel unwell again.
In addition to the original symptoms, I also experienced intermittent pain in my lower right abdomen and occasional pain in the right side of my reproductive area.
Is this a normal phenomenon or a new symptom?

Dr. Gao Jiankai reply Internal Medicine
Dear Mr.
Haihai,
Thank you for your letter.
Complications caused by Influenza A are primarily related to the lower respiratory tract or can affect the heart and central nervous system.
There seem to be fewer reported cases of pain in the right lower abdomen and on the right side of the reproductive organs, which may be due to other causes.
I recommend that you seek evaluation and treatment from the relevant specialties, particularly urology.
I apologize for the delayed response due to the busy nature of the hospital.
I hope everything is well with you.
Sincerely,
Department of Allergy, Immunology, and Rheumatology, Changhua Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare

Understanding abdominal pain and symptoms following an Influenza A infection can be quite complex, as the flu primarily affects the respiratory system but can lead to a variety of systemic symptoms. In your case, the progression of symptoms from mild fatigue and lower limb weakness to fever and then to abdominal pain and discomfort raises some important considerations.
Firstly, it is essential to recognize that Influenza A can lead to various complications, particularly in individuals with underlying health conditions or weakened immune systems. Common complications include pneumonia, bronchitis, and exacerbation of chronic illnesses. However, abdominal pain, especially localized pain in the right lower quadrant, is not a typical symptom of influenza and may suggest an alternative diagnosis.
The right lower abdominal pain and associated discomfort in the right side of the reproductive area could indicate several possibilities. One potential cause is appendicitis, which is inflammation of the appendix and can present with pain in the right lower abdomen. Other gastrointestinal issues, such as diverticulitis or even complications related to the gastrointestinal tract, could also be considered. Additionally, in females, gynecological issues such as ovarian cysts or ectopic pregnancy could present with similar symptoms.
Given that your symptoms worsened after the initial flu diagnosis, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly. The presence of right lower abdominal pain, especially if it is severe or accompanied by other symptoms such as fever, nausea, vomiting, or changes in bowel habits, warrants further evaluation. A healthcare provider may recommend imaging studies, such as an ultrasound or CT scan, to assess for any acute abdominal conditions.
Moreover, it is important to consider that viral infections, including influenza, can sometimes lead to secondary infections or inflammatory responses in other parts of the body. This phenomenon can manifest as abdominal pain due to referred pain from the diaphragm or irritation of the peritoneum, although this is less common.
In summary, while some abdominal discomfort can occur during or after a viral infection like Influenza A, the specific symptoms you are experiencing—particularly the right lower abdominal pain and right-sided reproductive discomfort—are not typical and should be evaluated by a healthcare professional. It is advisable to visit a doctor or an emergency department to rule out any serious conditions and receive appropriate treatment. Early intervention is key to managing any potential complications effectively.
