Abnormal secretion?

At the beginning of August, I had my period and engaged in sexual intercourse on the fifth day of my cycle while using a condom.
At the beginning of September, I took medication to delay my period for a trip, and then my period started a day or two later.
This time, my menstrual flow seemed cloudier than usual, and it felt like there was some discharge mixed in.
My period lasted about six to seven days, and afterward, the discharge has been yellowish-brown and has a bit of an odor.
Occasionally, I experience symptoms of stomach pain and nausea.
Is it possible that I am pregnant? Also, what should I do about the abnormal color of the discharge?

Tian, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/09/19

Dr. Lü Lizheng reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

The discharge has an odor and is yellow-brown in color, which may indicate inflammation.
Please seek medical treatment.
Menstruation has occurred, so the likelihood of pregnancy is low; you can confirm this with a home pregnancy test.
Sincerely, Dr.

Understanding abnormal discharge during a potential pregnancy can be a complex issue, especially when accompanied by other symptoms. Based on your description, it seems that you have experienced some unusual changes in your menstrual cycle and discharge, which can understandably cause concern.

Firstly, it’s important to clarify that while you had protected intercourse, no contraceptive method is 100% effective. Therefore, there is still a possibility of pregnancy, especially if the condom was compromised in any way. The symptoms you describe, such as the unusual color and consistency of your discharge, along with feelings of nausea and stomach discomfort, could potentially indicate a few different things.

1. Abnormal Discharge: The presence of yellow or brown discharge, especially if it has a noticeable odor, can be indicative of an infection. Common infections that might cause these symptoms include bacterial vaginosis or a yeast infection. These conditions can lead to changes in the normal flora of the vagina, resulting in abnormal discharge. It’s crucial to monitor the discharge for any additional symptoms, such as itching, burning, or increased odor, which would warrant a visit to a healthcare provider.

2. Pregnancy Symptoms: The symptoms you are experiencing, such as nausea and stomach discomfort, can also be early signs of pregnancy. However, they can also be attributed to other factors, such as hormonal changes or gastrointestinal issues. If you suspect you might be pregnant, taking a home pregnancy test could provide clarity. These tests are most accurate when taken after a missed period.

3. Menstrual Changes: You mentioned taking medication to delay your period, which can sometimes lead to irregularities in your menstrual cycle. Hormonal medications can affect the lining of the uterus and the normal shedding process, potentially leading to changes in the color and consistency of menstrual blood. It’s not uncommon for periods to be lighter, heavier, or different in color after taking such medications.

4. Next Steps: Given the combination of symptoms you are experiencing, it would be advisable to consult with a healthcare provider. They can perform a thorough examination, possibly including a pelvic exam and lab tests, to determine the cause of your symptoms. If an infection is suspected, they may prescribe antibiotics or other treatments as necessary.

5. Self-Care and Monitoring: In the meantime, keep track of your symptoms. Note any changes in the color, consistency, or odor of your discharge, as well as any additional symptoms like fever, chills, or severe abdominal pain. Avoid douching or using scented products in the genital area, as these can further irritate the vagina and disrupt the natural balance of bacteria.

In summary, while there is a possibility of pregnancy, the symptoms you describe could also be related to an infection or hormonal changes due to medication. It’s essential to seek medical advice to address your concerns and ensure proper care. Your health and well-being are paramount, and a healthcare provider can offer the best guidance tailored to your situation.
