There is a growth on the gum?
Dear Doctor, I have a concerning issue with my gums.
Approximately a month ago, I noticed an unknown growth on the gum of my second molar at the top inside.
At first, I thought it was just a regular gum swelling that would resolve itself, but after more than a month, it remains the same size.
The molar itself has a cavity that has progressed to the point where it doesn't hurt.
The growth is located on the outer side of the tooth and appears swollen.
I initially thought it was just a regular abscess that I could puncture with a needle, but it wouldn't burst and only bled a little.
It feels somewhat firm, and when I inserted the needle, it stayed in place when I released it.
It becomes harder when stimulated, but is soft to the touch otherwise.
I don't experience any pain when eating or otherwise.
I've searched online for related issues, but I've been very busy lately, so I'm reaching out for an online consultation to see if this is serious.
Thank you for your help in analyzing this situation.

The above situation may be caused by decay in the molars leading to inflammation and necrosis of the dental nerve, which can result in a gum abscess.
It is recommended to consult a dentist for further examination and to take X-rays to determine if root canal treatment is necessary.

When it comes to the growth of unidentified bumps on the gums, especially in the area surrounding a tooth with existing decay, it is essential to approach the situation with caution and seek professional dental advice. Based on your description, it appears that you have developed a firm, possibly cystic lesion on the gum tissue adjacent to your second molar. This type of growth can be concerning, especially since it has persisted for over a month without any signs of resolution.
Firstly, it is important to understand that gum lesions can arise from various causes, including but not limited to:
1. Dental Abscess: This is a localized collection of pus that can occur due to an infection stemming from a tooth with decay. Even if you are not experiencing pain, the presence of an abscess can lead to further complications if left untreated.
2. Fibroma: This is a benign tumor that can develop on the gums. Fibromas are usually firm and may not cause any discomfort, but they can grow larger over time.
3. Cysts: There are different types of cysts that can form in the oral cavity, including mucous cysts or odontogenic cysts. These can be fluid-filled or solid and may require surgical intervention if they do not resolve on their own.
4. Gingival Hyperplasia: This condition involves an overgrowth of gum tissue, which can occur due to various factors, including medications, hormonal changes, or chronic irritation from dental plaque or calculus.
Given that you mentioned the lesion is firm and does not easily rupture, it is crucial to avoid attempting to lance or puncture it yourself, as this can lead to infection or further complications. The fact that it bleeds slightly upon irritation suggests that it is vascularized and may require professional evaluation.
Recommendations:
1. Schedule a Dental Appointment: It is imperative to see a dentist as soon as possible. They will be able to conduct a thorough examination, possibly including X-rays, to determine the nature of the bump and its relationship to the underlying tooth.
2. Avoid Irritation: Try to avoid poking or irritating the bump further, as this could exacerbate any underlying condition.
3. Monitor Symptoms: Keep an eye on any changes in size, color, or associated symptoms such as pain, swelling, or changes in your ability to eat or speak.
4. Maintain Oral Hygiene: Continue to practice good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing regularly, but be gentle around the affected area to avoid further irritation.
5. Discuss Treatment Options: Depending on the diagnosis, treatment may vary. If it is an abscess, antibiotics may be necessary, and drainage might be required. For benign growths, surgical removal may be recommended if they cause discomfort or cosmetic concerns.
In conclusion, while it is understandable to feel anxious about an unidentified growth in your mouth, the best course of action is to consult with a dental professional who can provide a definitive diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan. Early intervention can prevent potential complications and ensure your oral health is maintained.
