Pregnancy Chances: Irregular Cycles and Symptoms Explained - Obstetrics and Gynecology

Pregnancy probability

I had my period on June 11, July 9, August 16, and then on August 20 I had unprotected intercourse with withdrawal.
On August 23, I had protected sex with my boyfriend, and on August 28, I noticed egg white-like discharge.
My period has not arrived by September 22.
What is the likelihood of being pregnant? My menstrual cycle is not consistent each month.

Lele, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/09/22

Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, based on your description, there is a possibility of pregnancy.
However, it is not possible to determine whether you are pregnant solely based on subjective symptoms.
I recommend that you take a urine test or consult a physician to check for pregnancy and the reasons for any irregularities in your menstrual cycle, to avoid ongoing concerns about the possibility of being pregnant.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health.

More Info

Understanding your chances of pregnancy can be quite complex, especially when dealing with irregular menstrual cycles. Based on the information you've provided, let's break down the factors that can influence your likelihood of becoming pregnant.

1. Irregular Menstrual Cycles: Irregular cycles can make it challenging to predict ovulation, which is the time when you are most fertile. Typically, ovulation occurs about 14 days before your next period is due. If your cycles are inconsistent, it can be difficult to determine when you are ovulating. This inconsistency can lead to uncertainty regarding your fertile window, which is the time frame when sexual intercourse can lead to conception.

2. Timing of Intercourse: You mentioned having unprotected intercourse on 8/20 and 8/23, as well as using protection on other occasions. If you had unprotected sex during your fertile window, which can vary based on your cycle, there is a chance of pregnancy. The presence of egg-white cervical mucus (the "egg white" consistency you noted on 8/28) is often a sign of ovulation, indicating that you may have been in your fertile period around that time.

3. Pregnancy Testing: Since your period has not arrived by 9/22, it would be advisable to take a home pregnancy test. These tests are designed to detect the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which is produced after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus. If you test negative but still do not get your period, consider retesting a few days later or consulting with a healthcare provider for further evaluation.

4. Symptoms of Early Pregnancy: In addition to a missed period, early pregnancy symptoms can include nausea, breast tenderness, fatigue, and frequent urination. However, these symptoms can also be related to other factors such as stress, hormonal changes, or premenstrual syndrome (PMS).
5. Consulting a Healthcare Provider: If you continue to experience irregular cycles or have concerns about your menstrual health and fertility, it may be beneficial to consult with a healthcare provider. They can perform tests to assess your hormonal levels and overall reproductive health, which can provide more insight into your situation.

6. Understanding Fertility: If you are actively trying to conceive, tracking your menstrual cycle, noting changes in cervical mucus, and using ovulation predictor kits can help you identify your fertile days more accurately. This information can be valuable in planning intercourse to increase your chances of conception.

In summary, while there is a possibility of pregnancy given the circumstances you've described, the irregularity of your cycles adds complexity to predicting your chances. Taking a pregnancy test and consulting with a healthcare provider can provide clarity and help you understand your reproductive health better. Remember, every individual is different, and factors such as stress, lifestyle, and health conditions can all play a role in your menstrual cycle and fertility.
