Swelling and pain of the labia?

Hello doctor, I would like to inquire about swelling in the area of my left labia, located between the urethra and the vagina.
It is red and painful.
In the past, I have had lumps above the vaginal opening and on the labia, but they resolved on their own.
However, this time it has been three days, and it hurts when I walk.
It also hurts when my legs are together.
What could this symptom indicate? Do I need to seek medical attention?

Cui Xiaojie, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/09/29

Dr. Lü Lizheng reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

It is likely that there is an infection and inflammation present; it is recommended to seek medical attention.
Sincerely, Dr.

Swollen and painful labia can be concerning and may indicate a variety of underlying conditions. Given your description of swelling, redness, and pain in the left labia, particularly in the area between the urethra and vagina, it is essential to consider several potential causes.

One common cause of labial swelling and pain is a condition known as vulvitis, which is inflammation of the vulva. This can result from various factors, including infections (such as yeast infections or bacterial vaginosis), irritants (like soaps, detergents, or hygiene products), or allergic reactions. Another possibility is a Bartholin's gland cyst, which occurs when one of the glands located at the vaginal opening becomes blocked, leading to swelling and discomfort.
Infections, particularly sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as herpes or gonorrhea, can also cause similar symptoms. If you have had unprotected sexual contact, it is crucial to consider this possibility. Additionally, conditions like lichen sclerosus or vulvar vestibulitis can lead to chronic pain and swelling in the vulvar area.

Given that this is the third day of experiencing these symptoms, and considering that walking and even simple movements are causing you pain, it is advisable to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider can perform a thorough examination, possibly including a pelvic exam, to determine the exact cause of your symptoms. They may also take swabs or cultures to test for infections, which can help guide appropriate treatment.

It is essential not to ignore these symptoms, especially if they are persistent or worsening. Early intervention can prevent complications and provide relief. In the meantime, try to avoid any irritants, wear loose-fitting clothing, and maintain good hygiene to minimize discomfort.
In summary, swollen and painful labia can arise from various causes, and given your symptoms' duration and severity, it is prudent to consult a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Your health and comfort are paramount, and addressing these symptoms promptly can lead to better outcomes.
