Tightness around the eyes?

Hello, doctor! I would like to ask about the tightness around my eyes.
It causes me to focus intensely on that eye, and at night when I close my eyes, it's very difficult to open them again.
Recently, I visited an ophthalmologist; one said my retina is being pulled, while another found no significant issues.
However, my attention keeps concentrating on the tightness in that area.
How can I resolve this?

Xiao He, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/10/03

Dr. Gao Pilin reply Ophthalmology

Xiao He: Tension and retinal pulling are not related; sometimes they are caused by eye fatigue or inflammation and dryness.
Fatigue requires more rest, while inflammation and dryness need medication.
Sometimes, applying a warm towel can also provide relief.
You might want to give it a try.
Taiwan E-Hospital Puzi Hospital Ophthalmology: Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM and Wednesday afternoon from 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM.
We hope to have the opportunity to serve you.
Gao Pilin.

More Info

Hello! Thank you for reaching out with your concerns about eye tension and discomfort. Based on your description, it sounds like you are experiencing significant tension around your eyes, which can lead to discomfort and difficulty focusing. This is a common issue that can arise from various factors, including eye strain, fatigue, and even psychological stress.

Possible Causes of Eye Tension
1. Eye Strain: Prolonged use of digital devices, reading, or any activity that requires intense focus can lead to eye strain, commonly referred to as digital eye strain or computer vision syndrome. Symptoms include discomfort, blurred vision, and tension around the eyes.

2. Fatigue: Lack of sleep or poor-quality sleep can exacerbate feelings of tension and discomfort in the eyes. When you are tired, your eye muscles may not function optimally, leading to increased strain.

3. Psychological Factors: Stress and anxiety can manifest physically, including in the muscles around the eyes. If you are feeling particularly stressed, this could contribute to the tension you are experiencing.

4. Refractive Errors: Conditions such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism can cause your eyes to work harder to focus, leading to discomfort. If you have not had a recent eye exam, it may be worth considering.

5. Muscle Imbalance: Sometimes, the muscles that control eye movement may not work in harmony, leading to discomfort and difficulty focusing. This can be exacerbated by fatigue or prolonged periods of concentration.

Solutions and Recommendations
1. Regular Breaks: If you spend a lot of time on screens or reading, follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This helps relax the eye muscles.

2. Proper Lighting: Ensure that your workspace is well-lit to reduce strain. Avoid glare from screens and use anti-reflective coatings on your glasses if needed.

3. Eye Exercises: Simple eye exercises can help relieve tension. For example, try rolling your eyes in a circular motion or focusing on a distant object for a few seconds.

4. Stay Hydrated: Dehydration can contribute to eye discomfort. Make sure you are drinking enough water throughout the day.

5. Manage Stress: Incorporate stress-reducing techniques into your routine, such as mindfulness, meditation, or yoga. These practices can help alleviate tension in your body, including around your eyes.

6. Consult an Eye Care Professional: Since you have already seen two different eye doctors, it may be beneficial to seek a third opinion, especially if your symptoms persist. A comprehensive eye exam can rule out any underlying conditions and ensure that your prescription is up to date.

7. Consider Vision Therapy: If muscle imbalance is suspected, vision therapy may be recommended. This is a structured program of visual activities designed to improve coordination and focusing abilities.

8. Use Artificial Tears: If dryness is contributing to your discomfort, using lubricating eye drops can help alleviate symptoms.

Conclusion
It's important to listen to your body and take your symptoms seriously. If the tension around your eyes continues to affect your daily life, seeking further evaluation from an eye care professional is crucial. They can provide tailored advice and treatment options based on your specific situation. Remember, taking care of your eyes is essential for overall well-being, so don't hesitate to reach out for help when needed.
