Sexual intercourse one day after the end of menstruation?
Hello, I had sexual intercourse the day after my period ended.
We used a condom throughout and did not ejaculate.
However, the day after the intercourse, I noticed a clear, slippery discharge from my genital area (when I wiped after using the restroom).
Could this be ovulation? Is it possible to ovulate just after my period ends? (My menstrual cycle is 30-35 days).
Thank you!
Xiao Zheng, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/10/03
Dr. Lü Lizheng reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Due to your longer cycle, ovulation typically occurs later.
The chances of pregnancy are quite low.
Sincerely, Dr.

Understanding post-menstrual discharge can be a bit confusing, especially when trying to determine if it is related to ovulation. Let's break down the menstrual cycle and the physiological changes that occur during this time to clarify your concerns.
The menstrual cycle typically lasts between 21 to 35 days, with an average of 28 days. It is divided into several phases: the menstrual phase, the follicular phase, ovulation, and the luteal phase. After menstruation, the body begins to prepare for ovulation, which usually occurs around the midpoint of the cycle. For a cycle that lasts 30-35 days, ovulation typically occurs between days 14 to 21.
The discharge you are experiencing after your period could be due to several factors. After menstruation, it is common for women to notice changes in vaginal discharge. This discharge can vary in consistency and color throughout the cycle. Early in the cycle, after your period ends, the discharge may be minimal and somewhat dry. However, as you approach ovulation, the discharge often becomes more abundant, clear, and slippery, resembling egg whites. This type of discharge is known as fertile cervical mucus and is a sign that ovulation is approaching.
In your case, experiencing a clear, slippery discharge just after your period could indicate that your body is gearing up for ovulation, especially if you are within the typical timeframe for ovulation in a 30-35 day cycle. However, it is important to note that ovulation usually does not occur immediately after menstruation. While it is possible for some women to experience early ovulation, it is relatively uncommon.
Additionally, the presence of clear discharge does not necessarily mean that ovulation has occurred. It could also be a result of hormonal fluctuations that happen during the follicular phase of your cycle. Estrogen levels rise as the follicles in the ovaries mature, leading to increased cervical mucus production.
Regarding your sexual activity, using a condom effectively reduces the risk of pregnancy, especially if there was no ejaculation. However, it is essential to remember that pre-ejaculate fluid can contain sperm, albeit in smaller quantities. If you are concerned about the possibility of pregnancy, consider taking a pregnancy test if your next period is late.
In summary, while the clear, slippery discharge you are experiencing could be a sign of approaching ovulation, it is not definitive proof that ovulation has occurred. It is more likely a result of your body preparing for ovulation as you transition from the menstrual phase to the follicular phase of your cycle. If you are tracking your cycle and discharge patterns, you may find it helpful to monitor these changes over a few months to better understand your unique cycle. If you have further concerns or irregularities in your cycle, consulting with a healthcare provider can provide personalized insights and guidance.
