Menstrual issues

Hello Doctor, I would like to ask about something.
About two weeks ago, I went for an examination due to pain and was found to have uterine fibroids and an ovarian cyst, both approximately 3 cm in size.
This time, on the eighth day of my menstrual period, I am still experiencing red blood, and I have noticed some blood clots (not much) while showering and using the restroom, which has never happened to me before.
What could this possibly indicate? Should I see a gynecologist for an examination, or should I wait a few more days to see if it improves? Thank you.

Ni Ni, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/10/06

Abnormal vaginal bleeding may have several possible causes, including irregular menstruation, inflammation, pregnancy, tumors, and more.
It is recommended to seek medical evaluation and treatment.
Sincerely, Dr.

When it comes to menstrual issues, especially in the context of discovering uterine fibroids and ovarian cysts, it is crucial to understand the potential implications and when to seek gynecological care. Based on your description, you are experiencing prolonged bleeding beyond the typical duration of your menstrual cycle, which is now accompanied by blood clots. This situation warrants careful consideration and likely further evaluation.

Uterine fibroids, which are non-cancerous growths in the uterus, can lead to various symptoms, including heavy menstrual bleeding, prolonged periods, and the passage of blood clots. The size of the fibroids can also influence the severity of these symptoms. In your case, with fibroids measuring around three centimeters, they could be contributing to the abnormal bleeding you are experiencing. Similarly, ovarian cysts, particularly if they are functional (related to the menstrual cycle), can also lead to irregular bleeding patterns.

The presence of red blood and blood clots after eight days of menstruation is not typical and may indicate that your body is reacting to the fibroids or cysts. While some women may experience variations in their menstrual flow, the combination of prolonged bleeding and the presence of clots suggests that it would be prudent to consult with a gynecologist. They can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include a pelvic exam, ultrasound, or other imaging studies to assess the fibroids and cysts further.

It is also important to consider other potential causes of abnormal bleeding, such as hormonal imbalances, endometrial issues, or other underlying conditions. Since you mentioned that this is a new symptom for you, it is essential to address it promptly rather than waiting to see if it resolves on its own. Delaying care could lead to complications, especially if the bleeding is excessive or if there are signs of anemia (such as fatigue, weakness, or dizziness).

In summary, given your recent diagnosis of uterine fibroids and ovarian cysts, along with the current symptoms of prolonged bleeding and blood clots, it is advisable to seek gynecological care as soon as possible. A healthcare provider can help determine the underlying cause of your symptoms and recommend appropriate treatment options, which may include medication to manage bleeding, hormonal therapy, or even surgical options if necessary. Your health and well-being are paramount, and addressing these symptoms early can help prevent further complications and ensure that you receive the care you need.
