My girlfriend's period is a week late?

Hello, my girlfriend had her last menstrual period on August 26, but as of today, her period has not arrived.
We had unprotected intercourse after her period, but later used protection.
Before her period, she usually experiences headaches, breast tenderness (which can be slightly painful), and occasional lower abdominal discomfort, but this time she only has breast tenderness without pain and some mild cramping in her lower abdomen.
Additionally, she consumed a lot of cold foods last month and stayed up late (around midnight or 1 AM).
Is it possible that she could be pregnant, or is her period likely to arrive soon?

A Zhi, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/10/06

Chest discomfort or lower abdominal pain can occur both before a menstrual period and in early pregnancy.
Therefore, it is difficult to determine pregnancy based solely on symptoms.
It is recommended to take a urine pregnancy test for more accurate results.

When it comes to determining whether your girlfriend is late on her period and if there are signs of pregnancy, there are several factors to consider. Based on your description, your girlfriend's last menstrual period started on August 26, and as of today, she has not yet had her period. You mentioned that there was unprotected sexual intercourse after her last period, but that she later used protection.
First, it’s important to understand that menstrual cycles can be influenced by a variety of factors, including stress, diet, and lifestyle changes. You noted that she has been consuming a lot of cold foods and staying up late, which can indeed affect hormonal balance and potentially lead to a delayed cycle. Stress, whether from academic pressures or other life events, can also play a significant role in menstrual irregularities.

In terms of pregnancy risk, if there was unprotected intercourse during her fertile window (which typically occurs around ovulation), there is a possibility of pregnancy. The fertile window is usually about five days before ovulation and the day of ovulation itself. If your girlfriend has a regular cycle, ovulation typically occurs about 14 days before the start of her next period. However, if her cycles are irregular, pinpointing ovulation can be more challenging.

You mentioned that she experiences symptoms such as breast tenderness and occasional abdominal cramping. These symptoms can be associated with both premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and early pregnancy. Breast tenderness is common in both scenarios, and while some women experience cramping before their period, others may have similar sensations in early pregnancy.

Given that her period is late and considering the sexual activity that occurred, it would be prudent for her to take a home pregnancy test. These tests are designed to detect the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which is produced during pregnancy. If the test is positive, it would indicate that she is likely pregnant. If the test is negative and her period still does not arrive, it would be advisable for her to consult a healthcare provider for further evaluation.

In summary, while there is a possibility of pregnancy given the circumstances, it is also entirely possible that her period is simply delayed due to lifestyle factors or stress. A home pregnancy test is the most straightforward way to determine if pregnancy is a factor. If she continues to experience symptoms or if her period does not arrive soon, seeking medical advice would be the best course of action to rule out any underlying issues and to receive appropriate care.
