Sudden increase in heart rate?
Sometimes, while resting or watching TV, my heart suddenly races, and I can feel it beating strongly without touching my chest.
I also experience a heavy sensation in my chest and start to feel short of breath.
Could this be heart disease? (My father has a heart condition.)

Hello Mr.
Chen, based on your description, your palpitations began suddenly, in episodes, and are characterized by an increased heart rate, seemingly unrelated to physical activity.
However, you did not mention any alleviating or terminating factors, as well as the duration of these episodes.
Similar to other clinical symptoms, more details can aid in differential diagnosis.
Since you mentioned accompanying symptoms such as chest tightness and wheezing, which are more concerning, I recommend that you schedule an appointment with a trusted family medicine or cardiology physician for direct consultation and evaluation.
The Changhua Hospital of the Ministry of Health and Welfare is concerned about your well-being.

Experiencing sudden heart racing, especially when at rest or engaged in low-energy activities like watching TV, can be concerning, particularly if there is a family history of heart disease, such as your father's condition. However, it is essential to understand that not all instances of heart racing or palpitations indicate a serious heart problem.
Heart racing, or palpitations, can occur for various reasons, many of which are benign. Common causes include anxiety, stress, excessive caffeine intake, dehydration, or even hormonal changes. In some cases, palpitations can be linked to more serious conditions, such as arrhythmias or structural heart issues, but these are less common, especially in younger individuals without a significant history of heart disease.
Given your symptoms of a racing heart, a feeling of heaviness in the chest, and shortness of breath, it is crucial to approach this situation with caution. While these symptoms can be benign, they can also indicate underlying issues that may require further investigation. Here are some considerations:
1. Anxiety and Stress: Anxiety can lead to physical symptoms, including heart palpitations and a sensation of tightness in the chest. If you are experiencing stress or anxiety, it may be beneficial to explore relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing exercises, meditation, or yoga.
2. Caffeine and Stimulants: High caffeine intake from coffee, energy drinks, or certain medications can lead to increased heart rate and palpitations. Monitoring and reducing your caffeine consumption may help alleviate these symptoms.
3. Physical Activity: If you are not regularly active, sudden increases in physical activity can lead to palpitations. Gradually increasing your activity level and ensuring you are well-hydrated can help.
4. Medical Evaluation: Given your family history of heart disease and the symptoms you are experiencing, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional. They may recommend tests such as an electrocardiogram (ECG), echocardiogram, or a Holter monitor to assess your heart's rhythm and function over time. These tests can help determine if there are any underlying arrhythmias or structural issues.
5. Lifestyle Modifications: Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can significantly impact heart health. This includes a balanced diet, regular exercise, adequate sleep, and managing stress levels.
6. Follow-Up: If your symptoms persist or worsen, or if you experience additional symptoms such as dizziness, fainting, or severe chest pain, seek immediate medical attention. These could be signs of a more serious condition that requires prompt evaluation.
In summary, while sudden heart racing can be alarming, it does not automatically indicate heart disease, especially in the absence of other concerning symptoms. However, given your family history and the nature of your symptoms, it is prudent to seek a thorough evaluation from a healthcare provider. They can provide personalized advice and determine if further testing or treatment is necessary. Remember, early detection and management are key to maintaining heart health, especially for those with a family history of heart disease.
