Should You Get Checked After Unusual Menstrual Symptoms? - Obstetrics and Gynecology

Do I need to undergo an examination?

After engaging in sexual intercourse, I noticed that my period started, but it only lasted for one night and was gone by the next day.
I still experience some cramping similar to menstrual pain, but the flow was not heavy.
These days are close to when my period is due this month.
Could this be related to the sexual activity, or is there another reason? Should I get checked, or should I just wait to see if my period comes?

Niming, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/10/12

Dr. Lü Lizheng reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Possible causes of irregular menstruation include inflammation, polyps, tumors, pregnancy, among others.
Please seek medical examination for confirmation.

When it comes to unusual menstrual symptoms, it is always prudent to seek medical advice, especially if the symptoms deviate from your normal menstrual cycle. In your case, experiencing a very short menstrual period that lasted only one night, accompanied by cramping, raises several considerations that warrant further exploration.

Firstly, it is essential to understand that menstrual cycles can be influenced by various factors, including hormonal fluctuations, stress, changes in weight, and even recent sexual activity. The fact that you experienced a brief episode of bleeding could be attributed to several potential causes:
1. Hormonal Imbalance: Hormonal fluctuations can lead to irregular bleeding. This can occur due to stress, changes in lifestyle, or underlying health conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or thyroid disorders.

2. Implantation Bleeding: If you are sexually active and there is a possibility of pregnancy, the bleeding you experienced could be implantation bleeding, which occurs when a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining. This typically happens around the time your period is due, which could explain the timing of your symptoms.

3. Menstrual Irregularities: Sometimes, menstrual cycles can be irregular due to various reasons, including changes in routine, diet, or stress levels. A short period could simply be a one-off occurrence.

4. Infections or Other Medical Conditions: Conditions such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), endometriosis, or fibroids can also cause unusual bleeding and pain. If there is any concern about these conditions, it is crucial to seek medical evaluation.

Given these possibilities, it is advisable to monitor your symptoms closely. If the unusual bleeding persists, or if you experience additional symptoms such as severe pain, fever, or unusual discharge, you should definitely seek medical attention. A healthcare provider may recommend a pelvic exam, ultrasound, or blood tests to assess your hormone levels and rule out any underlying conditions.

In summary, while it is possible that your symptoms are benign and may resolve on their own, it is essential to remain vigilant. If you have any doubts or if your symptoms change, do not hesitate to consult with a healthcare professional. They can provide personalized advice and determine whether further investigation is necessary based on your medical history and current symptoms. Remember, your health is paramount, and seeking clarity when something feels off is always the right approach.
