Irregular menstrual cycle?
Hello doctor, my period ended at the end of September, and shortly after, I noticed a large amount of dark brown discharge from my vagina, similar to menstrual blood, which lasted for several days.
After that, it decreased, but now I have red blood that resembles menstrual flow, and I also feel some discomfort in my abdomen.
Could this be menstrual blood? Is my menstrual cycle irregular?
Ting, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/10/14
Dr. Lü Lizheng reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
The response may indicate irregular menstruation; however, other possibilities such as inflammation, tumors, pregnancy, polyps, etc., should also be considered.
Please seek medical examination for confirmation.
Sincerely, Dr.
Lu Li-Cheng, Taoyuan Hospital.

Irregular menstrual cycles can be concerning and may arise from various underlying causes. It’s important to understand that menstrual irregularities can manifest in different ways, including changes in the timing, flow, and color of menstrual blood. In your case, the presence of brown discharge followed by bright red blood, along with abdominal discomfort, could indicate several possibilities.
Firstly, brown discharge is often old blood that has taken longer to exit the uterus, which can occur at the beginning or end of a menstrual period. It is not uncommon for women to experience brown spotting or discharge between periods, especially if they have recently finished their menstrual cycle. This can be a normal physiological response, but it can also be indicative of hormonal fluctuations.
The bright red blood you are experiencing now could indeed be a new menstrual cycle starting, or it could be a continuation of the previous cycle. If the flow is similar to your regular menstrual blood, it is likely part of your menstrual cycle. However, if you notice significant changes in the flow, such as an unusually heavy flow, clots, or if the bleeding lasts longer than usual, it may warrant further investigation.
Several factors can contribute to irregular menstrual cycles, including:
1. Hormonal Imbalances: Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, or changes in estrogen and progesterone levels can lead to irregularities in the menstrual cycle.
2. Stress and Lifestyle Factors: High levels of stress, significant weight changes, excessive exercise, or changes in diet can impact your menstrual cycle. Stress can particularly affect the hypothalamus, which regulates hormones that control the menstrual cycle.
3. Age and Developmental Changes: If you are in your teenage years or approaching menopause, your body may experience fluctuations in hormone levels that can lead to irregular cycles.
4. Medical Conditions: Conditions such as endometriosis, fibroids, or pelvic inflammatory disease can also cause irregular bleeding and discomfort.
5. Medications: Certain medications, including hormonal contraceptives, can affect your menstrual cycle. If you have recently started or changed a medication, this could be a contributing factor.
Given your symptoms, it would be advisable to monitor your menstrual cycle closely over the next few months. If the irregularities persist, or if you experience severe pain, heavy bleeding, or any other concerning symptoms, it is essential to consult with a healthcare provider. They may recommend a physical examination, blood tests to check hormone levels, or imaging studies to rule out any underlying conditions.
In summary, while irregular menstrual cycles can be common and often benign, they can also signal underlying health issues. Keeping a menstrual diary to track your cycles, symptoms, and any other relevant factors can be helpful when discussing your concerns with a healthcare professional. It’s always best to err on the side of caution and seek medical advice if you have any doubts about your health.
